Met him several times when I worked at the Glendale News-Press. First time I was getting some food at the pregame meal and he surprised me by saying, "I don't believe I have had the pleasure of meeting you before, young man." Talk about being speechless.

One thing broadcasters today should learn that Vin knew better than anybody is to let the big moments speak for themselves. Rewatch the Hank Aaron record breaking home run and listen to Vin go silent for 45 seconds. It takes a true pro to know the moment isn't about them.

R.I.P.

Legendary voice of the Dodgers for more than half a century going back to their last years in Brooklyn and then out to LA up until 2016. Great announcer. Smooth, friendly and knowledgable.

Used to listen to him when I lived in SoCal in the late 70's and early 80's on KTTV Ch.5 and KABC radio w/ Jerry Doggett & Ross Porter. ("brought to you by Farmer John")

He's seen it all.
Truly one of a kind.
They don't make them like that anymore.

Not much better in the summer in SoCal than being at the beach with a radio during a day game and listening to Vin.

Scully was loved on the east Coast too. Loved listening to him call baseball games. He could point out little things that made watching even better.
RIP Vin. You were Mr. Baseball with a mic.

The best ever. Probably the last announcer to actually put in the work to research the opposing teams players in depth. He must have had a rolodex with facts on every single player.

He was really good at bringing up obscure tidbits of info.

And he could tell these wild stories while smoothly commenting on the game at the same time

"There was one time I went ice skating with Jackie Robinson and his wife....that pitch to Piazza is low, now it's 2 and 1...and she was 7 months pregnant and I was nervous for her out there..."

Yeah he was amazing, as there's a deep drive to left by Castellanos and that will be a homerun

Yep. Used to love the stories he'd tell.

Arguably his greatest trait was that he knew when to stop talking and let the crowd noise tell the story.

On calling Montana to Clark "The Catch"...

"Candlestick Park is a madhouse now"...then silence from him.
