Darkstone has completed his statistical Vezina evaluations. Behold the top 10 goalies with at least 42 starts in goalie rating!

1. Thomas (847)
2. Rinne (832)
3. Luongo (832) Note: Taking a couple extra decimal places has Rinne just above Luongo.
4. Lunqvist (817)
5. Quick (814)
6. Price (814) Again, the decimal thing.
7. Crawford (811)
8. Fleury (810)
9. Niemi (810) You guessed it, decimal thing.
10. Bryzgalov (806)

So according to my evaluations, the nominators got it right. In fact, my numbers have the top three as pretty nicely separated from the pack.

Also, for those of you who never saw this, as well as those of you who have forgotten, this is the goalie rating formula:

GR=1000*Sv.Pct.-50*GAA+10*W/GP+1.5^(0.1*Sv/GP)

So there you have it.

Huh? I know it's in english because I can read it. However I have absolutely no idea what any of it means. Wow, do I feel like an idiot now.

Rep given.

Darkstone, I wonder if there is a feasible way to factor in the team's total giveaway/takeaway ratio. I think it's a logical assumption that the more giveaways a team has, the more a goalie has to work.

These types of stats will always be a bit hard to account for.

Luongo scores very well in Darkstone's ratings, but when you consider the quality of the team in front of him.

Thomas has a great D in front of him too.

That said, I'm OK with the nominations just because I saw this as one of those years where they barely even needed to nominate any other candidates because Thomas should run away with it.

The only way I could really statistically account for the team's actions in front of the goaltender was to include the saves/game part. Now, if a stat were kept for scoring chances on goal and saves on those, that percentage would be included in my goalie rating formula somehow, probably in the same part as the saves/game thing. Unfortunately, such a stat doesn't exist, so I can't account completely for the team. All we can really do is look at what the goalie did with the shots taken against him, independent of their quality, until such stats exist.
