I don't know my ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to hockey to be honest. I can't sit through a full game unless I'm chugging beer next to other people who are also chugging beer.

When I watch USA hockey my whole perspective changes. I guess it's the fact that Nebraska doesn't have a respectable hockey team (sorry Lancers and Stars fans), but something wakes up inside of me when I watch a USA game.

I grew up playing street hockey and I had a ton of friends who played high level ice hockey, so I'm not a fuckin' dunce, but I guess it takes a match like this morning between the U.S. vs Russia to remind me just how fucking ridiculously awesome hockey is.

I love football, I love soccer, but there is just something about hockey that nothing compares to. It was just a qualifier, but if I didn't know any better it felt like the fuckin' superbowl.

Rant over.

Heh.

Last nights game was awesome since it was USA vs. Russia and that always makes it something truly special. It's also always a lot of fun to seem them playing on the wider international rules ice which really opens up the lanes and forces defenses to really have to step it up. Players are constantly being sub'd in and out because of how much more physically demanding all that more ice makes them skate over. Its a total chessmatch. Very different feel than an NHL game were things are tighter.

And it was a truly awesome game. Two teams that seemed really evenly matched and played to win. And even though it was a prelim, lots was still on the line because of pride and whoever won this game gets a bye to the quarterfinals.

The fact it went to a shoot out like this just made it even more heart aging.
Just a really solid showing for american ice hockey and lots to be proud of.

Plus the fact we did it right in front of Putin on the russian home ice. Talk about icing on the cake.

Don't worry, my uncle was the same way today. Makes fun of me all the time about how serious I take the sport and how much I love it and the Rangers and USA. But he spent all morning live tweeting and watching the game and loved listening to Doc Emrick and getting hyped when he would get excited over a play.

My uncle used to like the Islanders growing up, but was never a big hockey fan. Today on our ride down to Atlantic City, he wouldn't shut up about the game this morning lol Said he will now follow the Blues, only because of Oshie and what he did and after watching the game today, understands and see's why I love the sport as much as I do.

Trust me, this game won over 1000's of fans who hated and bashed our sport.

:lame: Nebraska has 3 teams from the best junior hockey league in the country, and also has a top college program in UNO...we just don't have a pro team.

Other than that, dead on :suds:

After the Olympics they are going to give the NHL a try... end up catching a Florida - Minnesota game and not know what the fuck they are watching
