Apparently Upshaw has been working his ass off since Summer League ended. He's been working out six days a week, multiple sessions a day. He says that he's down 20 pounds and seems to realize the opportunity in front of him. He's gunning for your spot Sacre.

Good to hear. It would be great if he at least became a viable backup.

It will be interesting to see him during this upcoming training camp. I have concerns, mostly about his awkwardness in Summer League. Hopefully that was more to do with his poor conditioning.

On TWCSportsnet last night, they showed video of a recent scrimmage at the practice facility. Obviously they showed us the best highlights, but he looked alright. They interviewed him after and it really seems that he's mentally in a good space and realizes the magnitude of this opportunity.

Really good to hear. I'll have to see if I can catch the replay of that. Sometimes bigs like that take a little longer to get full control of their bodies. They sometimes grow faster than their muscles can keep up. If he's a late bloomer physically, it could be a good deal for the Lakers and they could have their own version of Whiteside. Like I said though, I'll be happy if he becomes a viable back up. Anything beyond that will be gravy.

That's what I'm hoping for, that he's still developing control of that big body of his.

This guy could catch fire and apparently is already a defensive stalwart but needs work on his offense. Sacre maybe in trouble.

Yea, lakersrule and Upshaw's weight reduction seems to have motivated Hibbert to lose 14 lbs working with a nutritionist and being a regular member in the weight room at the Lakers' facility. Maybe everyone is buying in. Recent reports indicate that Upshaw is going to work with the second teamers in training camp as B. Scott likes his defense. Sacre may be on the outside looking in soon enough. Maybe Sacre will follow Wes Johnson across the hall in Staples Center.

His defense could get him on the roster. Byron seems pissed and embarrassed at the defense the Lakers played last year.

Indeed TJF12. Scott wants better D and apparently he is willing to play the players who will play better D. Upshaw appears to be one of those players. People that didn't play D are obviously gonso and now we have a legit presence in the paint, which was a huge sieve the past couple of seasons, with Hibbert, Upshaw, and Black. Sacre better learn to play D if he wants be considered in the mix.

Sacre will get cut. Mitch indicated yesterday that they'll have no problem cutting players with guaranteed contracts. That would be Sacre and likely Kelly IMO. We know what Sacre is at this point. Upshaw has more potential.

Could be others. Some of the other guys they've signed this year have partial guarantees. But it would make the most sense roster wise to buyout Sacre, send Upshaw to the D-League and role with Hibbert, Bass, and Black as centers

Heard some good things about Upshaw from the Media day people today - good defender with great potential. Some of the rookies had issues during the summer league, but are doing considerably better now. Upshaw most likely makes the team if he plays solid defense

Me too CL67. Ole Sacre kind of grew on me there for a couple of years.

well hell, THAT kinda news would break my heart...

I see Sacre as one of those guys that any team could use to hold down the end of the bench. He's been around a few years, knows his role and accepts it, busts ass in practice and on the court when he gets a chance to play and doesn't cause problems in the locker room or get into trouble off the court.

Unfortunately, he's also expendable because there are 100 other guys who can do what he does.

And Upshaw is one of them who appears to do it even better TJF12 or at least that is the prevailing Lakers' opinion.

I'd say the difference is that Sacre is as good as he's ever going to be. Upshaw has the potential to actually be a contributing player.

Yep, you are probably right TJF12 unless Sacre has improved demonstrably this year. We shall see.

Sacre is a garbage time player while Upshaw could be a solid rotation player in crunch time minutes.
