Great list. I had no idea Ditka played at Pitt. He was the first TE to surpass 1000 yds in a season in the NFL. That's so cool. Dan Marino, Tony Dorsett, Can't argue with Pickett. Maybe I overlooked him but I didn't see Hugh Green. He was the first defensive player considered for the Heisman.

Maybe the first modern player to be considered for the Heisman. Leon Hart won it at Notre Dame and he played both offense and defense.

Green strictly played defense. He finished 2nd in the voting to George Roger's which fascinates me because there were guys like Hershel Walker, Marcus Allen and Anthony Carter still playing college ball. I want to say Walker was either a freshman or Sophmore and had 1600 yds rushing.... I think. Marcus Allen had 2300 yds. Make of that what you will. I only know this because I'm an SC fan and we played all of those teams. Beating Michigan 17-14. Losing to So Cal 23-13. Losing to National Champion UGA 13-10 then getting throttled by Dan Marino, Hugh Green and Pitt 37-9 in the Gator Bowl. Rogers ran for 1900 yds and 15 tds but I think him having 24 straight 100 yd games in his college career helped a lot because Allen clearly had the better season.
