I tried to figure this out once and my head nearly exploded. I am trying to figure out what the easiest strength of schedule (based on opponents' combined record) could be.

For example, if you play everyone in your division twice, there are some guaranteed wins there as your opponents cannot all go 0-6 in the division.

So what would have been the lowest possible amount of wins your opponents could have under the previous 16 game season?

including games against your team?
6-12
So your combined opponents' records will all be 16 games. So I would assume there would be a total of 256 games played in the record (16 x16). Obviously your opponents are guaranteed to win some of those games because they are playing other opponents you played that year, so your opponents' combined record could not be 0 wins and 256 losses. I am wondering what the worst combined record could be.

gotcha, yeah 6-12 would be correct for the rest of the division. But then your divisional opponents also play the same AFC and NFC division so there are another 24 games there too (I think). It gets stupidly complicated fairly quickly.

I dont know the answer, but because you play your own conference plus 4 from other side. That means you have to play teams with winning records.
I cant see it being possible to be under .400 ever.

well I am wrong on that.

The 1999 "Greatest Show on Turf" Rams faced an absurdly easy schedule on their way to the postseason. The cumulative winning percentage of their opponents was .363 which makes it the third easiest schedule ever faced by Super Bowl Champ.

the other two werent 16 game schedules

I remember when Cam Newton was in the MVP conversation (maybe he won it that year) his schedule was stupid easy, which was the reason I originally went down this rabbit hole.

- The easiest regular season schedule ever faced by a Super Bowl Champ belongs to the 1970 Colts. The cumulative winning percentage of their opponents was .352, they faced three teams who ended over .500 and eleven teams who ended under .500.

Assuming every team was determined to lost every game except when they played each other you would have the following.

18 wins from division foes( each team would be 3-3 against each other which would turn out to be 6-6 per team. 3 teams means 18 wins

Gets a little trickier for the intra and inter conference division teams. Each team would be 3-3 in their conference which would mean 12 wins. But they would also be playing your division rivals so you would need to add 3 wins for each them. So that would be 15 wins for each division so 30 total wins. The remaining in conference game would also require a win since they will have to have played someone in the division or in the intra conference division So that would be 49-207 or a .191 winning percentage.

Nearest I can figure, a combined record of 69-189 is the worst I came up with

Division opponent 1 2-14
Division opponent 2 2-14
Division opponent 3 2-14
(each team splits remaining division games and loses everything else)
AFC opponent 1 6-10
AFC opponent 2 6-10
AFC opponent 3 6-10
AFC opponent 4 6-10
(each team splits with division opponents and wins against my division opponents)
NFC opponent 1 6-10
NFC opponent 2 6-10
NFC opponent 3 6-10
NFC opponent 4 6-10
(each team splits with division opponents and wins against my division opponents)
In league opponent 1-15
In League Opponent 0-16
(Only similar teams played would be each other)

So, if I applied the schedule correctly, this should be the absolute easiest schedule one could have, a .267 win percentage.

The sad part of this scenario is that 2 of these teams would be in the playoffs. :dhd:

but your in conference division opponent would also play your two other in league opponents right? So there are two more wins in there somewhere?

No. In league is based on where you finished the year before. So if you were 3rd in your division your other 2 in league teams would be the 3rd place teams from the other 2 division you didn't play. So your other division opponents would play the teams that finished where they did the year before. 1st vs. 1st 2nd vs. 2nd.
but you also play the 3rd place team of the division you are playing every team. And THAT 3rd place team will also play the other two 3rd place teams that you are playing.
