In truth, I tend to associate MSG primarily with Chinese food, so I wonder why that taste was given a Japanese name.
You may know this, but is it because it was first identified by someone Japanese?


Kikunae Ikeda (Japanese chemist): umami is a form of "delicious."


It's easy to be heavy handed when pouring MSG out of a bottle.

I knew "umami" translated to delicious, but I didn't know about the chemist. It now makes perfect sense why a Japanese word was used. Thanks. I've always been a fan of etymology.
