some consider us loaded offensively but somewhat suspect defensively

We have a GG 3B and GG caliber in Ian/Elvis. I'd love to have a hard hitting defensive stud at 1B too, but I'm ok making an upgrade offensively at 1B as long as the defense at least stays the same.

Counting the pitchers our infield committed 83 errors this last season that's not good

And of those positions, 1B was the least error prone with only 8. The breakdown, which adds up to 94 actually. Maybe you left out catcher?

P = 16
C = 11
1B = 8
2B = 11
3B = 20
SS = 28

Granted some positions have more chances to make errors, but among MLB teams, our 1B group was the highest ranking of all positions. That is the only position where we were in the top 10 for fewest errors.

1B defense is not something we should be worried about. 1B offense IS

Our pitchers are not so good at fielding, but we still finished third in the AL after a terrible start.

actually i did forget Catcher, thanks. but i think a quality 1st baseman makes some of the errors committed by the other infielders go away by better handling their errant throws. nothing against Moreland's ability and even MY is adequate but there were a number of throws from Elvis, Ian and even Beltre that a quality 1st baseman handles but were missed and were listed as errors on them for bad throws

Yeah, I'd agree with that. A 1B that can dig a low throw can save errors from the rest of the IF.

Because he is a better fielder than Mitch and has more power than Mitch. Now that we have Nap behind the plate, our biggest hole right now is at 1B. Getting a one year wonder fluke in Kotchman isn't going to do anything and that is who's name I have heard dropped around here. Kotch has a better glove, but that translates to what, an extra 4 errors saved over the course of a season?

Give me the guy that can hit 20-25 HR's, 75+ RBI's, still bats left, and can do all of that in the same number of AB's that Mitch did. I like Mitch as a guy, but he isn't a lights out hitter or defender. He is just another "guy" to put in the lineup. Pena at 33 has at least 3 good years in him, even more if you can rotate him out as Young gets field time at 1B.

Disagree: Mitch is a ball player and just needs time. The only reason we should make a change is for Fielder or Pujols (unlikely).

One thing to factor in is range when counting errors, sometimes they recieve errors b/c they reach balls that other fielders don't, and that definitely plays a factor with all of Beltre, Andrus and Kinsler as all 3 have good range in respects to their positions

no argument about your point but a quality 1st baseman who can dig out those throws could save at least 5 of those errors probably more

a throw in the dirt that is not handled by the 1st baseman is 90% of the time ruled as an error on the thrower. you have to admit that Moreland & Young are not that good at digging out those throws and we need someone who is.

Moreland made several good digs and stretches this year. Young doesn't make some that a really good first baseman does but I have no problem with those two splitting time.

I care less about the missed digs because most of the time they are at least blocked and keep the guy at first. What kills me are the shots under the glove, off the glove, or that couldn't be gotten to that end up in the corner rattling around while everyone gets extra bases.
