4 division winners, 3 wildcards:

Week 1: Tripleheaders on Saturday and Sunday

#1 seed is the only team to get a bye
#2 vs #7
#3 vs #6
#4 vs #5

Week 2:
Divisional weekend - same as before

Week 3:

Championship games - same as before

No extra games, two more teams get a shot at the playoffs, more revenue for the NFL. More playoff football for us fans.

No more situations like 2008 where the 11-5 Pats miss the playoffs and the 8-8 Chargers win the division and make the playoffs. You could still have a 9 or maybe 10 win team miss it but with 11 you're nearly guaranteed a spot.

The only negative here is for the #2 seed - no first round bye. But that could make week 16 and 17 games more interesting.

Any negatives?

The negative imo is you're going to have more 9-7 or worse teams making the playoffs who will more than likely get hammered on the road playing the #2 seed.

Is there that much of a difference between 2 playing 7 and 2 playing 5?? so i dont see your negative to be a valid answer...

Is this being talked about or is this just a thought that came into your head??

Understood...The question was posed and I answered it. The system ain't broke so I'm not trying to fix it. The #2 has earned the bye for years...why take it away now? To see a marginal team lose in the 1st round?

I wouldn't favor adding two more teams to the playoffs, since that would further diminish the importance of the regular season. It would generate more revenue, though, so I wouldn't be shocked of the league were to add playoff teams.

I wouldn't do it either, but I think that would be the easiest way to add more revenue...2 more playoff games added to the TV pkg.

THis plan does not affect the 3-6 teams at all... only the 1,2 and 7... and the one and 7 love this plan... Only the 2 is affected negatively in this plan, but if the 2 cant beat the 7 they didnt belong there anyway... So i am not really opposed to this, i just want to know if this plan is actually being talked about or just an idea from the OP...

Agreed. It would make more sense to me than adding games to the league schedule, which is something that the league has talked about. I'm sure that the NFLPA would much more readily agree to expanding the playoff filed than it would to adding regular season games. Still, even adding two more playoff teams might not get the Chargers into the postseason, which I suspect is the real objective of this thread.

That puts us in line with the NBA and NHL where half the teams make it and you have a better chance of a <.500 team making the playoffs.

Playoffs should be hard to make, not just a second season. But I get that revenue trumps all, so this is a probability.

Good question...I think it's been on the table, but I'm not sure if it was official or not. The owners seem more in an 18 game reg. season. Of course that would drive more money, but if it came down to those options the extra playoff game would be my preference.

I think that the players union might actually favor expanding the playoff field. It would be much more difficult to get it to agree to an 18-game regular season.

You're plan only adds ONE more team into the playoffs, per division. There are already six teams in the playoffs
4 division winners, 2 wild cards.

I don't like. I like the fact that #1 and #2 seeds both get byes.

Although i heard that if they do extend to 18 games, they will not allow a player play more than 16 games... very strange rule...

I can't see them adding any more playoff teams without expanding the league. 12/32 teams is about right (it's .375 of the league). Say they expanded to 36 teams then I could see them going to 14 teams (.389 of the league). If they ever ever get to 40 teams then 16 would be likely (which is .400 of he league, and maybe still a bit high).

Under this format, here are the extra teams that would have made the playoffs the past 10 years.

2012
Steelers 8-8
Bears 10-6

2011
Titans 9-7
Eagles/Cowboys/Cardinals/Bears 8-8

2010
Chargers 9-7
Buccaneers/Giants 10-6

2009
Steelers/Texans 9-7
Falcons 9-7

2008
Patriots 11-5
Bears/Buccaneers/Cowboys 9-7

2007
Browns 10-6
Eagles/Cardinals/Vikings 8-8

2006
Broncos 9-7
Packers/Panthers/Rams 8-8

2005
Chiefs 10-6
Cowboys/Vikings 9-7

2004
Bills/Ravens/Jaguars 9-7
Saints 8-8

2003
Dolphins 10-6
Vikings 9-7

That's one 11 win team, five 10 win teams, nine 9 win teams, and five 8 win teams.

None of those teams deserved to make the playoffs.

That actually surprises me how often a 10 win team misses, basically every other year. If an extra team was added that would allow most (but still not all) 10 win teams to get in. Of course, for as many 10 win teams that you're adding, you're also adding an 8 win team. We've seen 9 win teams enter the playoffs, get hot and win a Super Bowl, do we really want to see greater potential for an 8 win team to do that?

I still think I'm against it because I think it would dilute the importance of the regular season, but it's not as awful as I first thought.
