Highlights of the day: There were two, both involving the pass game -- one that went for the defense and another that went for the offense. On the first, quarterback Alex Smith attempted to hit receiver Robert Davis on a deep ball down the middle. But corner Josh Norman raced over from the other side and intercepted the slightly underthrown pass. Later in the day, Smith connected with receiver Jamison Crowder on a deep post for a 40-yard score. Crowder got behind safety Montae Nicholson; Smith hit him in stride.
Defensive lineman Jonathan Allen said he notices himself doing better coming off the edge this camp. Allen continues to play with a maturity that's hard to find in young players. He plays with good leverage, stays in his lane and knows how to take on double teams well. Allen said this has been the most fun football camp he's been a part of -- and not just in the NFL.
Rookie report: Inside linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton has been calling plays for the No. 2 defense during camp. He's quick to diagnose and react, as was evident on a handful of plays Saturday -- especially on two plays in the red zone in which he helped make a short stop. Hamilton also was able to disengage from a Kyle Kalis block in the middle to help make a tackle for a one-yard gain. He did get walled off on a couple of occasions, but he has flashed.
