Looks like Nelson is gonzo...we are seriously depleted at the position even before this and even more so now.
Looking at the Draft for help? Word is it is void of top end talent at the position. Couple that with this sterling draft history for the franchise:
2011: Robert Sands (5th round) - too early to tell
2008: Corey Lynch (6th round) - hanging around on Tampa Bay's roster
2007: Marvin White (4th round) - just signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL
2007: Chinedum Ndukwe (7th round) - played for the Raiders last year. Had one INT and two tackles in two games played. Out of the league (at the moment)
2006: Ethan Kilmer (7th round) - picked off Dree Brees once. Story for the grandkids.
2004: Madieu Williams (2nd round) - left for the Vikings after rookie contract was up. Did nothing. Went to the 49ers. Started 3 games.
2002: Lamont Thompson (2nd round) - played for 6 years...for 4 different teams
2002: Marquand Manuel (6th round) - played for 8 years...for 6 different teams
2000: Mark Roman (2nd round) - played for 10 years..."best" years in Green Bay and San Francisco
1999: Cory Hall (3rd round) - 6 seasons...3 career INT's...2 teams
1997: Tremain Mack (4th round) - Did make the Pro Bowl one time (as a kick returner)...also broke the law a lot.
1995: Sam Shade (4th round) - Meh. Decent from what I remember. Nothing outstanding. "Better" years in Washington. Played for 8 seasons
1993: Lance Gunn (7th round) - started 8 games in his rookie season. Out of the league the next year.
1992: Darryl Williams (1st round) - the last good Safety the franchise has drafted. Also the only one the team selected in the first round with Mikey Boy as the owner/GM. Played for 10 seasons (Bengals, Seahawks then back to the Bengals). 31 career INT.
That's where I am stopping.
A 20 year snapshot of Safeties the Bengals have taken in the draft. Nothing to worry about with losing Nelson, etc. Their draft history speaks for itself. Here's to holding out hope that we can find the next Cory Hall in the mid rounds!
