On Sunday afternoon a tornado hit Goderich, Ont. Goderich is home of the longest running Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. It started in 1950 and still continues today. I had the pleasure and good fortune to referee in the tournament, for the first time, when I was sixteen and went there for five years in a row. I went back to celebrate and referee in the 25th anniversary tournament in 1974. They had their 50th Anniversary and Alumni Reunion Tournament in 1999. I had just moved to Las Vegas and was quite surprised when they made the effort to find me and invite me back for the reunion. I did go. The town of Goderich and it's people have always had a special place in my heart and I'm quite saddened by the event that happened on Sunday.
Among the NHL players that played in the Tournament, over the years, when they were Pee-Wees are: Wayne Gretzky, Pat Stapleton, Paul Henderson, Rod Seiling, Jim Schoenfeld, Rick MacLeish, Darryl Sittler, Chuck Lefley, Butch Goring, Ron Ellis, Brad Park, Nick Libett, Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis, Bruce Boudreau, Bob Gainey, Rick Middleton, Dale Hunter, Randy Carlyle, Craig MacTavish, Craig Hartsburg and two of Goderich's own, Larry Jeffrey and Gary Doak. There are many others.
