Imho, the only real knocks against Young and Mathewson is the era in which they played. Their numbers are so off-the-page amazing. But playing in the pre-history days of the game is a near death sentence.

I actually just switched my vote. I think Lefty is just ahead of XX but its close

I don’t follow. I think this is a legit 4. Maybe a tad early for Mathewson, but I am not sure even I support that statement.

I want a catcher (Bench or Berra) to be listed soon, and Robinson is the “other” best bat available. But I think Foxx is the best available position player by a healthy margin.

I will grant that the only one of the4 who has a chance to close it down in this poll is Foxx because of the breakdown of the candidates, I don’t really subscribe to your reasoning.

Young has the hands-down highest name recognition of the 4. Of the other 3, Lefty is the one MOST forgotten by history. But I think Mathewson is more well known than XX, so I really don’t see XX getting any subconscious advantage.

I really don’t understand the love for young. You’ve been stumping him forever. I am not sure if he is in my top 10. Probably is. But not sure.

I have both Matthewson and grove well ahead of him.

Name recognition plays a huge role for those not actively taking part in the discussions.

Again, not to denigrate Young’s support here. If he takes this spot, I will be very happy with the result. He is close enough here to be a fitting recipient.

i understand what you are saying... but i think you are missing that we have only said it would be a tie breaker... when a decision is too difficult... this is more valid than just saying, tie goes to the offensive player... or whatever... or even basing it on a non baseball reason...
