Two hard hit balls tonight with an OBP over .600 for the season. The guy is looking like his father

Gwynn

I know I made a thread about him earlier, but I'm not certain that Revere is the better centerfielder. Gwynn plays better defense, walks more, and has more pop. I'm not going to blow my load all over the guy after a few games, but I would like to see him continue to start at least until he cools off.

Gwynn is a bench player. He's proven that he can not be consistent over a full season. Revere also has a higher career OBP than Gwynn.

Gwynn also has a career .319 SLG. Revere has a .330. No real difference, but it does show that Gwynn does not have more pop.

Revere is also better on the base paths and has a lot more stolen bases in a lot less games played.

It's great that Gwynn has a hot bat right now. But, that shit is not going to last if his other 1,495 at-bats have told us anything.

Revere is 25 and can still improve. Gwynn is 31 and has already shown his peak ability, which is not much.

I think their offensive abilities are a wash. Revere might steal more bags but Gwynn looks a lot more patient, even if his career OBP is a little lower. For most of his career, Gwynn has sucked offensively. No one is contesting that. But through the first couple of games this season, he has been willing to take his walks and has hit some balls really hard when given a chance. He had a .386 OBP in 107 games in the minors last year with a .767 OPS. It's not impossible for a guy to change his approach and become a better player late in his career. He has done nothing wrong in the early going, I'm just say he should be given more opportunities here and there to start in center.

Not to mention, he is leaps and bounds ahead of Revere defensively (for the time being).

Gwynn's performance has bought himself at least another day in centerfield. Sandberg even said today that Revere is totally healthy, and that he just liked the way Gwynn has been playing. If he has an 0-4 night, fine, put Revere back in the lineup. Even if you think Ben is a better player (which is questionable) Gwynn is hot right now and you should ride him out until he cools off.

Sure. Sandberg started him until he cooled off, and now he's back to putting up similar production to Revere.

I think Sandberg is going to use both Gwynn and Revere this year. Whoever is producing plays. Whoever isn't sits.

Anthony was one of my favorites when he was batting leadoff for the Padres early on.

Here's a good article where he talks about getting that call from his Pop about the inevitable. I'm pulling hard for him to stay on the roster in Philly, though I'd imagine money is not an issue for the family.
