How is he throwing him under the bus?

I doubt Ryan believes that he's elite right now either.

And that's one of Matt's problems. He doesn't believe enough in his own talent and abilities.

Elite or not I will always remember and be amazed at how Ryan came up with a long game winning pass to Gonzales in the final few seconds to beat the Seahawks in the playoffs from deep. Seemed awfully clutch and saved his ass from a major beat down by the press for never winning a playoff. Football Gods must of had mercy on him. I was relieved for him but wanted a Hawk victory.

Yesss, just wish he would have finished the job the followin week with the huge lead we opened up against the Niners :(:bawling:

Elite is the dumbest and most retarded word thrown around in football. You don't have to be elite to win shit. Matt Ryan is an above avg. qb who has the ability to make good throws and pretty good plays.

I don't see how this is offensive. Also I thought before Gonzo said he didn't want to be traded or that he is happy with the Falcons(this is when they were still sucking)?

The media people in Atlanta reported that Tony did not want to be traded, that he wanted to retire here but he said he would agree to it if it would help the team. :noidea:

Maybe Tony was playing PC, because you're right...I heard him say that he didn't want to be traded myself...interesting that he would say the opposite now...I don't think anyone would've been upset if he asked to be traded given the season was in the tank, but the whole way he was brought back was screwed up, no training camp, etc. just shows this was on his terms.

Matt Ryan is not elite. I think he's one of the most overrated QBs in the league.

That said, he's in the good category. He's a good QB and with some help around him (DEFENSE namely) he could win an SBOWL.

FYI my QB rankings are: Elite, Good, Average, Poor. And Wilson is in the good section. Only Manning, Brady, Brees, and Rodgers I'd put in elite.

*Waiting for this thread to turn into a Matt Ryan bashing*

Weeeeeelllll don't mind if I do!

First of all...

...Ehh. I've already said my piece on Matty Romo a bunch of times. I'll save it for another time when I'm not so burned out on breaking down QB play.

And that's one of Matt's problems. He doesn't believe enough in his own talent and abilities.

Neither do I.

Mike Smith has done just as much for ATL that Dan Reeves has done minus the Superbowl, which he was 5 yards away from getting to. That's really his only knock. Hell this is the Falcons first losing season. You can blame playoff screw ups on him, Ryan, no o-line, or no defense...I can't think of who else the Falcons could get right now to get them a SB so I'm fine with Smith.

I heard the interview and of course I knew that pc about Ryan would make the headlines...it blew up on the afternoon drive here on radio sports talk...you had a few calling in saying Tony G is wrong, but the vast majority of fans here realize that Matt is not an elite QB.

He's a solid QB, smart, adequate arm...if he has time he'll make the right read most of the time and move the ball...when pressure comes...Matt is going to - a.) throw it away, b.) throw a pick, or c.) get sacked....he cannot extend the play and make something happen when the play breaks down...that's not his game.

If we're all being non biased...there are really no more than 4 to 5 legitimate elite QBs in the NFL...imo it wasn't not a slap to say Ryan is not elite.

It's not about, if Ryan is elite or not, it's about a teammate that is retiring and should, throwing his qb under the bus for no reason, other than putting up with a used to be great TE that can't cut the mustard anymore....
I saw him drop some clutch passes this yr and never heard Ryan put him down one time....That's the difference between class and classless ...just sayin'

The whole "elite" thing is a joke anyways.

Eli started this whole shit of QBs whining about being considered elite.

I could care less if my QB is ever considered elite as long as he finds a way to win.

And then this year so close to scoring to win and a deflection lets SF intercept to score a last second TD.

Yeah seriously. He was asked a question and gave an honest answer (even saying Ryan would get there someday, which I highly doubt). What was he supposed to say, that Ryan was one of the top 3 or 4 QB's in the league? Nobody thinks he's elite, why should Gonzalez?

:agree: All these terms mean nothing without winning and that is a team accomplishment. When you look down the line of SB winning QB's, there are just as many that fall into the pretty good to good category as there are in the so-called "elite" group. And the 4 we put in that group right now got to see a guy in the "good" group holding the trophy this year.

As for the Falcons, Ryan is a good QB most of the time and Gonzalez, imo, was pretty generous in his assessment saying he will get to the next level. I don't think Atl will win anything until they get something better on the defensive side of the ball, a consistent running game and some depth. The coach and QB are the least of that teams problems. As for the trade thing, nothing wrong with the way he said it or what he said. He would have liked a shot at a SB before he was done and was disappointed, obviously. My guess is there were no takers because the contending teams had their roster already set in that department at the time.

This is the media and haters blowing it way out of proportion, as expected.

I'm glad Matty Ice is my franchise QB. I still believe in him.
