Bobby Orr is god. The greatest player in the history of the NHL.

He could score.
He could pass.
He could play great defense
He could check
He could fight

He dominated on BOTH ends of the ice.

So for the next 7 minutes or so sit back and relish in the greatness that is Bobby Orr.

Watching that reminds me of a men's league where there's the one guy that played pro or college hockey and is just on a completely different level than everyone else on the ice. Number 4 was good.

124 +/- ratio in 1970/1971. I would say a little above average for a 3rd line defenseman.

Gretzky never broke +100 even with all those 200+ pt seasons. Larry Robinson Came the closest with a +120 I believe. Orr's +/- per game is miles above any other player. Orr was +.906 per game for his career (including the injury shortened seasons). No other player came close to +.600 per game and Gretz comes in around +.345 per game. As Bosox said, Orr dominated every inch of the ice, Gretz dominate from the blue line forward and also needed an enforcer to protect him. Something Orr never needed.

The difference between a great hockey player and the best. Not much of a Bruin fan, but Bobby Orr is undeniable.

And that's why I don't have much respect for Gretz. Orr would never accept the title of greatest even though it's true. Gretz never mentioned Orr when discussing the topic as far as I know. Sometimes ego gets in the way of the truth.

Good videos. I've seen all those highlights a bunch of times and always enjoy them. I am fortunate enough to be old enough to have grown up watching Orr and the Big, Bad Bruins and like you I believe he is the greatest to ever play the game. However I don't begrudge Gretzky. His offensive prowess was pretty darn spectacular and the fact that he did all he did in the NHL at his size is amazing.

Yep, cause when I think of Gretzky the first thing that comes to mind is "selfish raging egomaniac" :L

Ummm, when someone yelled "Orr was better" to Gretz his response was "you must be from Boston." I wasn't talking about his on ice play. Figured a hockey mind from Canada would understand what I meant. :mmph:

??????

I've never heard Gretzky say he was the greatest. I HAVE heard him say that Mario was more talented than he was and that Crosby was going to break all of his records. During his playing days I never saw Gretzky come across as anything but a class act when discussing the game.

Why is it that people need to denigrate other players in an attempt to make their guy look better?

All I did was state fact. Orr dominated every inch of the ice, Gretz didn't. It's some of the non-Bruins fans posting here that are looking to start things. If you don't what I or any other Bruins fans are saying, ignore threads for us. Very simple.

I am not nor will ever be a B's fan but Orr was head and shoulders above Gretzky and everyone else, and that was with one knee. Without Orr changing the way the game was played does Wayne score 90 goals in a season??? Possibly but I think doubtful and this isn't meant as a diss of '99'

I wasn't talking about his on ice play either.

I don't get what's wrong with that response. Hell, in that story I'd say that the fan is the one who's being much more of a dick.

Am I really so crazy for thinking that the guy who took a shot at Gretzky (one having nothing to do with hockey) out of nowhere might have been the one who was trying to start something?
