Actually it was a perfectly clean hit. But David Krejci is out with a concussion. With Marc Savard out with brain damage as well, the Bruins will be showcasing quite a bit of AHL talent for a minute. Just like to add that I'm good with the NHL trying to protect the players' noggins. Make rule changes, have the players wear motorcycle helmets, whatever. I'm sick of this shit!

Wow... Oshie is a friggin beast. I don't think either player saw each other until they were within 12 feet of each other. Krejci might not have seen it coming at all.

I don't know what the answer is mainly because I'm not that clever. The bottom line is that this game is played by large, agile men and high speed collisions occur which cause injuries. Do we penalize all hits to the head in the NHL, like they currently do in the OHL and the QMJHL, regardless of whether or not the hit was intentional? I do like the introduction of softer shoulder and elbow pads, the goal should be to protect the player, not arm them with hard plastic projectiles.

There is an intent to injure rule that has been in the league for as long as I can remember, but the refs and Colin Campbell seem reluctant to enforce it. Instead they created Rule 48 which at face value seems good, but has created confusion for players about what constitutes a legal body check and what "crosses the line".

It certainly sucks for Krejci and Bruins fans, I hope he has a speedy recovery.

At the end of the video provided by AJ, it shows Oshie knocking Chara off his skates prior to his hit on Krejci. That is something you rarely see.

Latest on Krejci:

The 24-year-old playmaker will be out at least a week with the concussion, and will be evaluated by team doctors before returning to the B’s lineup.

Not dirty at all. Neither player saw each other coming, the stronger skater/person who braced them self first won.

I hate when refs call that in my games. Its not a penalty at all.

How the hell do you knock down a guy that's a foot taller than you? Spread the word: Oshie is on the juice.

C'mon Dash. You should know this by now. There is and never has been an "Intent To Injure" penalty in the NHL or any other league. It's "Attempt To Injure.

Penalties aren't called on what a player's intentions are. Referee's aren't mind readers.

You're right mbhhofr, but there is also intent to injure regarding officials. I found the following in the NHL rulebook. For player on player, it is attempt to injure (rule 21.1)

21.1 Match Penalty - A match penalty involves the suspension of a player for the balance of the game and the offender shall be ordered to the dressing room immediately.

A match penalty shall be imposed on any player who deliberately attempts to injure or who deliberately injures an opponent in any manner

However, if a player goes after an official, the wording is "intent to injure" -
Rule 40 (Physical abuse of officials):

40.1 Game Misconduct - Any player who deliberately applies physical force in any manner against an official, in any manner attempts to injure an official, physically demeans, or deliberately applies physical force to an official solely for the purpose of getting free of such an official during or immediately following an altercation shall receive a game misconduct penalty. In addition, the following (40.2, 40.3, 40.4) disciplinary penalties shall apply.

40.2 Automatic Suspension – Category I - Any player who deliberately strikes an official and causes injury or who deliberately applies physical force in any manner against an official with intent to injure, or who in any manner attempts to injure an official shall be automatically suspended for not less than twenty (20) games. (For the purpose of the rule, “intent to injure” shall mean any physical force
which a player or goalkeeper knew or should have known could reasonably be expected to cause injury.)

Edit: I would also argue that in most cases that a player attempts to injure a player that the player also has an intent to injure that player.

They've decided to go past that, which might be for the best. I found this list of players that were all out with concussions as of two weeks ago:

Ondrej Pavelec, ATL
Marc Savard, BOS
Jason Pominville, BUF
Raitis Ivanans, CAL
Peter Mueller, COL
Adam Foote, COL
Pierre-Marc Brouchard, MIN
Matthew Lombardi, NAS
Bryce Salvador, NJ
Ian Laperriere, PHI
Cam Jansen, STL
Keith Ballard, VAN
Drew Doughty, LAK
Brian Little, ATL
Antti Miettnen, MIN

And that's less than a month into the season. I'm also not sure what the right answer is, but I at least like the blindside rule. Guys are gonna sit because of accidents sometimes, and tall guys are at a definite disadvantage (Chara is gonna get hit with a suspension someday for sure), but it's a good start. They'll have to figure out the details along the way I guess.

I watched the second half of that game and TJ was all over the place. I'd take him on the team anyday.

Whatever the NHL does, please please don't mimic the NFL. After todays call on the eagles, I have lost all faith in that league.

shitty deals for Collie, but a fucked up call..clean hit.

You have to penalize the player by the way the rule is written.
If in his report to the League, the referee writes the penalty was given for deliberate intent to injure, instead of deliberate attempt to injure, the penalized player has a very good appeal argument because as the rule is written, intent is not given as a reason to penalize him. I've seen an appeal upheld in minor pro, because a referee made that mistake. No, it wasn't me.

That's why it's great having a former referee participating in this forum to provide actual real life experiences. Always appreciate your contributions, mbhhofr.

A lot of these concussions could be avoided by one simple adjustment...

NHL PLAYERS SHOULD WEAR THEIR HELMETS PROPERLY.

That is all.
