Jordan Hill and Swaggy P should be traded for picks in this and future drafts. Then after this season they can get a core or plays in FA. Rondo and Marc Gasol would be great to add. Then use this and the next few drafts for strong role players. It is the best way to get better fast.

Guys like Hill and Swaggy P are part of what would lure max FA's to the Lakers. Top FA's aren't likely to want to come to the Lakers if they are looking at having to wait another 2 or 3 seasons for the Lakers to add the right role players and/or for rookies to develop.

With Randle due back and with Ed Davis and Tarik Black looking pretty decent, you could possibly look at trading Davis, Black or Hill, especially if the Lakers can think they can get a guy like Marc Gasol or Monroe. But Swaggy P is points off the bench which are needed in the NBA and would be very valuable going forward.

To piggyback on my previous post:

As bad as their record is, the Lakers are not bereft of talent. They have some solid pieces. What they don't have is those top level players who ultimately make the difference between wins and losses. This is why we see so many games where the Lakers will hang with a team (even the top teams) for 3+ quarters, only to lose.

The game vs. the Wizards is a good example of this. The Lakers played well for much of the game, built a big lead, but couldn't hang on. When it came down to time to win the game, the Wizards had John Wall while the Lakers had Clarkson and Ellington. While they both had good games, they aren't at that level of a John Wall and aren't going to finish games like Wall.

With a couple of top FA's to take over, the Lakers likely don't lose that game.

I doubt you could get much of anything of value for Nick Young. But I'd dump Hill if I could get a late 1st rounder or two 2nd rounders. The way his contract is, he's going to be let go to clear max cap space anyway (he's got a team option that can be picked up or revoked at the end of the season). If you're not picking up his option to clear space anyway, why not dump him for a pick if possible?

The Lakers have max cap space with Hill. And they can afford a guy in the 8-10 million range also. And sign what free agents they have they want to bring back.

We don't have any assets - we have scrubs and young players that are several years away from reaching their potential assuming that you believe they will be

Rondo is to old in my opinion - he is already 28 years old and would be 29 by next season and 30 or 31 by the time the Lakers are in the form to run for a championship. I think the Lakers need to continue working on younger talent that will be there for a few years. Rondo would have to be given a maximum contract and that would suck away from other possibilities that would be better. The Lakers are better to hold court and get that protected first round draft pick and see how Randle comes back and when. If Kobe were to hold up next season, then think about changes.

I don't mean clear space for a max guy though I see how it could read that way. I mean they clear his salary for the maximum amount of cap room they could possibly enter the summer with. He's got a team option so his salary isn't on the books for this summer unless they decide to pick it up. Considering they signed him last year with that option, that's entirely what the Lakers intend on doing (that's usually the point of team options). He won't be picked up unless they view the market and think they can't get a significant upgrade.

This much is true. The Lakers have very little in terms of assets for trades. Randle is the best asset but I highly doubt they'll move him so that's basically a non-starter in discussions. The next best asset is Hill. Everything else has little to no value.

The Lakers in all likelihood will not be a player in trades before the trade deadline. Why would they do that when they can wait till the summer and pick-up guys like Monroe without moving anybody?

This Laker team needs to be completely redone from top to bottom. There is no player on this team that should not be considered as trade bait. OMG look at their record! I would cut or trade them all but a few. I would also offer a lucrative retirement offer to Kobe. I would also swallow my pride and realize that the Scott experiment was a mistake and look for a real proven head coach. sorry baby B...

Hassan Whiteside might be a cheaper option and the kid can really play. Somebody on the Whiteside thread compared him to a young and healthy Bynum. I thought it was a good comparison.

Scott was a mistake? :L

It's a bit too early to say that with the young and crappy roster we have.

We don't need to trade way assets for picks. We are going end up with four picks this year if we keep going on the present course.

Yep, the protected top 5 pick and the Rockets pick in the 1st round. Then, I believe it's our 2nd round pick and another 2nd round pick that we picked up in a trade.
