I think Hughes is fading and that Haran is poised for a good year.

I am no scout and have not looked at any scouting video of him. But he still a 3/1 K/BB pitcher who has pitched his whole career in a band-box.

Would I pay him the same dollar that I would pay Heran? No way. I want Hughes, assuming he comes at a discount. Going after Hughes potentially allows us to get the extra bat (I was actually thinking about Chooch and plug in all our McCann scenarios).

Never mind. I just saw that Chooch signed with Philly today.

Josh Johnson apparently said he wants to pitch for either the Giants or the Padres.

I would be OK handing the 5 slot over to Johnson. We gotta keep Petit, Kickham, Surkamp, Grope, Escobar, etc ready to go on a moment's notice, but if he is back, he would be HUGE!!!

I'd be down for Johnson as well. He will be 30 in January. He has never been very durable, however.

2005- 12.1 innings (0-0, 3.65)
2006- 157.0 innings (12-7, 3.10)
2007- 15.2 innings (0-3, 7.47) hurt
2008- 87.1 innings (7-1, 3.61)
2009- 209.0 innings (15-5, 3.23)
2010- 183.2 innings (11-6, 2.30)
2011- 60.1 innings (3-1, 1.64) hurt
2012- 191.1 innings (8-14, 3.81)
2013- 81.1 innings (2-8, 6.30)

It seems like at that rate, he's probably due for at least a good season, innings wise

There is a HUGE dose of concern on JJ. He had elbow surgery this past season, so while I would like the flier, I acknowledge that he is a big risk and would not be too upset if he signs elsewhere.

Understandable, he could go either way - he could be real solid or he could be flat out terrible - but if you have a rotation of Cain, Mad Bum, Tim Lincecum and Tim Hudson, I guess Josh Johnson is worth the risk - plus there are a few guys that could give them some innings if he flames out

What's the deal with Ryan Vogelsong?

Am I the only concerned about the fact that we just dropped 23 mil on a player who hasn't thrown a ball in anger since Eric Young broke his ankle [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOC-T8lOuZk"]into a thousand pieces[/ame]?

It's an ankle injury, not an arm injury.

I like the signing. Two years isn't much of a risk, and Hudson is a gamer. He's been very solid since the Tommy John surgery. Low risk, potentially high reward.

I really like this move. Again, 2 years is perfect for a starting pitcher with what we have waiting in the wings, he's a veteran guy and good in the clubhouse. Lincecum may be able to learn a thing or two from Hudson too, both are smaller guys and like the two-seamer. Lincecum is entering a new stage in his career, and Hudson could be the perfect mentor. A lot of the pitchers on this staff could learn something from the guy.

Big thumbs up from me, also means more Crawford.

Giants committed $58MM for two starters, while it probably would have taken more money than that and more years to sign Nolasco, Santana or Jimenez. Great value here too.

Interesting, word is A's finished "second" in signing Tim Hudson. Price was likely too rich.

Your probably right CC, my only counter is that's his right ankle/leg that he's pushing off with.

He isn't getting any younger. Pitchers don't pitch better in the late 30's/40's unless you are Curt Schilling/Roger "Roids" Clemens/Andy Petitte/Randy Johnson etc.

I know in our park he's not going to have to be 25 yr old Hudson, I just would have liked this signing 10 years ago vs this this years version.

Of course you do and I would love a blow job from Adriana Lima but we don't always appreciate what we have in front of us and more often then not reach for the stars. Of course we would like the 25 yr old Huddy, but we aren't getting Huddy at a 25 yr old price either. Huddy has been VERY solid the last 4 yrs with little to no drop in productivity, injuries excluded. He has been rather durable, besides his TJ and ankle injuries, throughout his career and still shows no signs of losing effectiveness. His injury concerns are not career threatening IMO so it's really just a matter of when he is ready to pitch.

On another note, we would be CRAZY not to at least kick the tires on Josh Johnson! He is extremely talented...with the only red flag being how injury prone he is. But this guy healthy is a Cy Young candidate and his stuff is some of the nastiest in the NL. Assuming he isn't trying gouge the Giants for crazy money, He would be a GREAT sign, 1 yr incentive laden contract and if he performs, we re-up with a multi-year deal or get the draft compensation when someone else signs him. I would rather have what Johnson could be if healthy over Arroyo any day of the week, even at the risk of him missing half the season. I LOVE this and this is precisely the kind of move that could tilt pitching match ups vs the Doyers in our favor.

He was someone I wanted BADLY when I saw him on the FA list prior to the season ended. I just didn't know if he was chasing money, comfort, a ring...what his deal is/was. Apparently being close to home is important for him.
