The rate number produced by the rating system was derived from the average goal differential and strength of schedule.

For what it's worth, for much of the season the Pens stood on top of this list. The loss of Crosby and then Malkin has taken a toll on the Pens ranking even though the team has kept its head above water during this stretch of games.

The Pens and the Bruins are the teams which generate their rates by superior defensive play. They are the two best defensive teams in the league. The other teams in the top five are located at the top of the league in goals. The Pens are ranked seventh in total goals and the Bruins tenth.
