The Season So Far-week –Week 9
1st 4: Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, Clemson
2nd 4: Penn State, Florida, Oregon, Georgia
3rd 4: Oklahoma, Utah, Auburn, Minnesota
Analysis: Big shakeup this week. Alabama played well enough without their starting QB to retain the number one rating. Ohio State looked excellent in a win over LSU. Oregon moved back into the playoff picture with losses by Notre Dame and Oklahoma. Oklahoma is not out of the picture yet. Penn State, quietly moves into the top 10.
Playoff Teams: Ohio State, Clemson, LSU, Alabama
Analysis: Clemson has the easiest path. Ohio State has two tough games with Penn St and suddenly resurgent Michigan. The winner of LSU and Alabama is a sure bet unless they get upset in the SEC Championship game. Florida and Georgia engage in a playoff elimination game this week.
Most surprising: Penn State, Florida, Minnesota, and Baylor.
Analysis: All four teams have a shot at the playoffs. Baylor would have to go undefeated. Florida can stay alive with a win against Georgia. Minnesota has a big matchup against Penn State coming up next week, which will likely eliminate one of them.
Most disappointing: Arkansas, Nebraska, Florida State
Analysis: Arkansas is the clear leader here with another poor performance against Alabama. Schedule looks a little easier with only a game against LSU looking unwinnable. Nebraska was the favorite in the BIG Ten West, but won’t get close. A big loss to Indiana at home last week really hurt their season. Florida State was supposed to be the main challenger to Clemson, but already has 4 losses. A new coach is a possibility here.
Heisman Trophy: Joe Bordon, Jalin Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Chase Young
Analysis: Joe Bordon takes the lead this week followed closely by Jalin Hurts. Oklahoma lost, but Hurts put up big numbers. Tua T gets a pass with his injury, but his big moment will come against Joe Bordon and LSU. A defensive player has an uphill battle to win this award, but Chase Young had one of the great defensive games of all time against Wisconsin and has been a terror all year for Ohio State.
Big 3 Games of the Week: Georgia-Florida, SMU-Memphis, Utah at Washington.
Analysis: The winner of Georgia-Florida will win the SEC East and have a shot at a playoff game. Two very evenly matched teams in a tossup game. Georgia 24-21 in a squeaker. SMU is fighting for the G-5 New Years Day bowl game. Memphis is also in the picture. Look for a high scoring game. SMU to edge out Memphis 38-35. Utah is in a struggle with USC for the Pac 12 South. Washington is pretty much out, but possesses an excellent team. Another tight game at Washington with Utah edging Washington by a score of 24-23
Big games in the regular season: Clemson at South Carolina, Minnesota-Iowa, Wisconsin-Minnesota, Penn State-Ohio State, Ohio State-Michigan, Oklahoma-Baylor, LSU-Alabama, Auburn-Alabama, Georgia-Auburn
Analysis: Biggest remaining regular season games after this week look like LSU at Alabama and Penn State at Ohio State. All 4 teams are undefeated and the winners are in great shape to make the playoffs. Two teams from the Big Ten could yet make the playoffs. A one loss Penn State or Minnesota could have SOS to make the playoffs. The Oklahoma-Baylor game could provide a playoff team. The SEC has a lot of tough matchups against each other and might be reduced to one team.
