The Season So Far-week –Week 5
1st 4: Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Georgia
2nd 4: Clemson, LSU, Auburn, Wisconsin
3rd 4: Florida, Notre Dame Penn State, Texas
Analysis: No upsets, but Clemson continues to play so-so, and a drop from number 1 is the result. Alabama has defensive problems, so the ratings are really in flux until the top contenders play each other. A big match this week is Auburn-Florida and that should start the log jam in the SEC.
Playoff Teams: Clemson, LSU, Oklahoma, Ohio State.
Analysis: Alabama has a tough schedule remaining and despite their number 1 rating, matchups with LSU, Auburn, and potentially Georgia, looks too tough for them to hurdle. Despite their drop in the ratings, no one appears capable of beating Clemson. Oklahoma and Ohio State look dominate and should be able to make the playoffs.
Most surprising: LSU, Wisconsin, Wake Forrest, and SMU
Analysis: LSU has a gauntlet of teams to face, but seems to be the most complete team in the SEC. Wisconsin is still undefeated, but looked human last week. They’re appear ready to challenge Ohio State for a playoff spot. Wake is a complete surprise, and maybe on a good day could beat Clemson. SMU has moved into position to challenge for the G5 playoff spot.
Most disappointing: Tennessee, Arkansas, UCLA, and Michigan
Analysis: The SEC is power heavy at the top and Tennessee and Arkansas continue to be among the 2 most disappointing teams in the country. Another loss for UCLA leads to their continued failure. Despite the best game of the year for Michigan, it was against Rutgers. Upcoming challenges will allow us to judge whether or not Harbaugh is in trouble.
Heisman Trophy: Jalin Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Joe Burrow, Justin Fields.
Analysis: At this moment in the season, it’s a very close race for the Heisman. Key matchups before the season’s conclusion should determine the winner. Trevor Lawrence has played himself out of contention, and Jonathan Taylor needs a lot more yards against key opponents to get back in the race.
Big 3 Games of the Week: Auburn-Florida, Iowa-Michigan, Michigan State-Ohio State.
Analysis: A battle of the undefeated between two top 10 teams is the big game this week. Auburn’s defense should be dominate against Florida, and their offense is just good enough to win a close low scoring game. Auburn 20-17. Has Michigan rebounded or is Iowa a better all-around team? Michigan at home is tough to beat, so I’ll take Michigan by 17-14. This one can go either way. Ohio State is looking powerful, but Michigan St’s defense if the best they’ve faces. Ohio State is very tough at home and MSU has offensive problems. Ohio State 31-13.
Big games in October: Wisconsin-Ohio State, Oklahoma-Texas, Oregon-Washington, Auburn-LSU, Florida-LSU.
Analysis: Wisconsin and Ohio State should be the Big 10 winner. Same with Oklahoma and Texas. Pac 12 is muddled, but Oregon and Washington will settle the North, with Utah the likely South winner. Big games in the SEC starting this weekend will limit the SEC to one team in the playoff.
