I read the first book of this series but from what I understand the show doesn't follow the books exactly.

I might check it out...I never picked up book #2 in the series

The Strain kind of wore itself out, but I'll give this a chance.

Not crazy about the writing and picking one kid with a specific background and location.
I mean, I get it, great actress, but wouldn't a zillion dollar research center want to compare multiple kids (boy vs girl)? And maybe find someone a bit closer that didn't require a road trip so the kid could bond with her protector?

Should have given her a rare condition or gene that would have made finding her important to the research.

So far its relatively close. Some gender changes (Babcock) and some characters are introduced in different ways - but the first two episodes largely follow the beginning of the book.

I assume the entire series is going to take place in the present, I cannot see them committing to the time jumps the book did.

I kinda assumed that season 1 of the show would cover the near future aspects, and that season 2, if the show gets renewed, would time jump to First Colony with Peter Jaxon, Alicia Donadio, et al.

It's been pretty good imo. They've made some changes, and revealed a lot of backstory that didn't show up till the 3rd novel. So far, it's all worked, though.

sadly not a high bar. i think the only other new show i'm currently watching is the kids are alright. granted i never think to include any hulu/netflix/prime show in that mix.

I watched the first couple eps last night. Why is the study going all-in on this random kid they chose? They didn’t explain anything special about her except that she wouldn’t be missed. All that could have been skipped with a few throwaway lines about her having a rare blood type or being the grand daughter of one of the test subjects or something that makes her in the least bit special.

Stopped watching. I didn't read the books. I see where they want to take this, but I'm just not invested in why it had to be this kid. Seemed like lazy and/or simple writing to me. I'm actually more invested in the infected ones and found myself rooting for them....

Will look at Umbrella Academy next.
