Seems to me that there are still a fair number of quality names available on the UFA pool. Excluding doan, who will of course sign somewhere not in SJ, there are still some good depth guys to be had. Granted, sometimes guys sign in europe or the KHL and they are still seemingly UFA's, but I havent heard updates on these guys...
Forwards:
1. Andrei Kostitsyn. his bro got a deal, but not him. Here's a guy with a checkered record but unquestionable skills who can easily be good for 20+ goals on a reasonable line. Strange that no team has snatched him up. If dougie grabbved him for 1 year at 2 or 3M that would surely add some nice depth to the pathetic forwards at a minimal risk.
2. Petr Sykora. Getting older, but just the same age pretty much as zues. And, he scored 21 goals on a team that made the SC finals. I dunno if he went back to the czech rep. but I wouldnt mind him given his experience, cups, and still effectiveness.
3. daymond Langkow. Another older player but was still nicely effective for phoenix last year in the PO's too. Like sykora, he could be cheap on a short deal and give upside with minimal downside.
Defense:
Carlo Coliaocovo: his replacing of kent huskins made a big big difference in the sharks series against the blues. He was mobile, a threat offensively and played well overall. I thought he would be picked up by a team like the wings quickly to build their depth in place of lidstrom. However, he remains out there and would be a serious upgrade over murray IMO. He's also just 29, so right in his prime. Id love for dougie to sign him to a reasonable deal. and move murray.
matt gilroy and scottie hannan are a couple other names on D, though coliaocovo is the only name I would want to consider.
Dougie has well over 5M of cap space and since he will miss out on doan and trades seem unlikely, he has to be nervous. he wanted nash but failed. Wanted doan, and failed. Likely inquired about suter, parise, and weber but got none. DP talked about him doubling down on losing bets but its not like dougie to stand pat. All he has done after a clearly shitty year and poor team is bring in a coach, sign a 4th liner, and add some depth on D with stuart. Im guessing that is hardly what dougie set out to do when the summer began. He cant possibly be satisfied with his bottom 6 as they are today. maybe there is one more trick of up his sleeve that includes one of the remaining UFA's for next to nothing.
