WV looked like it was in for a dogfight with VT in the first half as the Mountaineers squeaked out to a 33-30 halftime lead. The 2nd half was a different story as the Mountaineers outscored the Hokies 49-21 to blow out VT down the stretch. VT committed 25 turnovers today and that was a big part of the drubbing they endured. Staten and Gary Browne led the way with 18 and 12 respectively as the Mountaineer guard play was dominating in the 2nd half. WV also enjoyed a 36-22 advantage on the boards and collected 16 steals. The Mounties shoot 50.8% from the field for the game and cruised in the 2nd half by making big shots and getting points off turnovers.
So the Mountaineers move on to 12-1 headed into Big 12 play where the defensive pressure should be handled better as the Big 12 guard play is better. It will be interesting to see just how much better that guard play will be against 40 minutes of hell on a wooden rectangle floor. We all should be pleased to be where we are at this juncture in the season but real tests are to come as we up the competition dramatically. Have a Happy New Year Mountaineer fans!
