It is strange, because this wasn't always the case. If you look back to the 70's and 80's most teams, successful or not usually relied on a quality RB. Seems like each team had a quality back, and it might not be the case, but it sure seemed like they were healthy for longer periods of time. You had OJ to Earl Campbell to Walter Peyton, even the bad teams that had nothing going for them at least had a quality running back. Now, just put whoever out there.

You left out Hurts
Ohhhh I get it. Hurts is a RB because he’s not an over the hill white guy that runs a 5.4 40 and is a statue in the pocket.

RBs need their own union and lawyers that collectively bargain on their behalf

The Giants are already paying Daniel Jones to run the football. That's why they can't pay Saquon to run the same football.

Because the long range weapon back then was nowhere near as good as today. The QB's today are trained to be so much more accurate.
Coupled with all the rules that protect the QB & receiver.

The running back is becoming an outdated weapon. Why send in a tank when you can fire a Cruise missile.

Not sure I'd lump in CMC with the rest. Was traded for a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. The 2nd was used as part of a trade up for the #1 overall pick to get the top QB prospect.
RB haters have fudged the data for years and make silly claims to state their case.

This one really puts things in perspective.

Kickers don’t get beat up like RBs do. No one in the nfl does. Teams are better off finding a cheap one over retaining a good one that’s played nfl football for 4-5 years. A bad kicker will lose games the rest of the team won.

Watching a running back demoralize a defense is one of my favorite things to watch.

I always remember back to Riggins in the Super Bowl VS Miami
Nothing fucks with a DC more then when they’re dying the death of a thousand cuts giving up 3-4 yards a pop in the running game. Just about every DC you’ll ever meet begins with principle 1 - You’ve gotta stop the run. I think this is even more impactful today in a pass happy league. Most teams are built to cover and rush the passer and the run becomes an after thought. A team that’s committed to the run game and can be successful with it is flat out demoralizing for a defense.

Doesn't this entire discussion make using a 1st on a RB a good bet? They already have limited years, so the extra year of the rookie contract is pure value correct? It only goes wrong if you sign them to a big extension.

now have Dez do apples to apples.

Avg. per starting Kicker vs. Starting RBs. (instead of adding in 4th & 5th stringers)
