A comment in an article I was reading this morning caused me to take a closer look at what the Astros have been doing, and I just realized that at the moment they have NO veteran signed for next year : not one. (By "veteran", I mean a guy that has been through FA or has at least 6 years service time.) And only 8 guys will even be arb eligible (1 3rd arb, 3 2nd arb, 4 1st arb) - the other 15 youngsters currently on the team will be earning very close to league minimum. (*Yes, that adds up to 23 - there will be 2 FAs who might be leaving the team : Francisco Cordero, and Jed Lowrie.)
They are in massive rebuild mode : "super dooper" rebuild mode. It wasn't a "salary dump" per se. They sent a LOT of cash with the veterans they shipped off so they aren't saving much money at all this year. But they got what they wanted - lots of young talent. They got some talent for the majors and re-stocked their minors with all these trades. As it stands today, the Astros are committed to less than $20M in payroll for next season. So they have plenty of cash to bring in select FAs to build around while waiting for this talent to blossom, or they can stockpile money for a year and sign the FAs when they think they are ready for a run.
But what it means for US is that we should be VERY happy every time we play Houston this year
