Comparing the NHL to the NBA here is completely irrelevant. The NBA has one Canadian team so it was easy to find them a "home" arena in the US for the year.

Unless you somehow convince all 7 Canadian teams to play their entire season in the US, there was no other option because of Canadian border regulations.

Lord knows it would've been awfully cruel robbing those cities and teams of their screaming crowds of zero every night
