Coin flip may have kept Cowboys from taking Manziel

It’s clear that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had a strong degree of interest in quarterback Johnny Manziel. Ultimately, Jones disregarded the fact that Manziel was the highest-rated player on the Cowboys’ draft board at pick No. 16 and selected tackle Zack Martin.
But what if Martin hadn’t been there? It’s a question that ultimately came down to a coin flip.
On Thursday night, Rams coach Jeff Fisher said that his team was trying to swing a trade with the Ravens at No. 17 for Martin.
“We were talking with Baltimore,” Fisher told reporters. “It would’ve been pricey but worth it. It was a good pick for the Cowboys.”
If the Ravens had won the coin flip with the Cowboys at the Scouting Combine, the Rams and Ravens could have gotten the deal done, and Martin wouldn’t have been on the board at No. 17 for the Cowboys.
If Martin hadn’t been there, could Jones have ignored the fact that Manziel was the No. 1 guy on the Dallas board?
We’ll never know the answer to that question, obviously. But if the Cowboys had simply lost that coin flip in Indy, the rest of us may have won the ability to watch the ultimately reality show unfold in Dallas.
“He’s a celebrity,” Jones said of Manziel. “He’s Elvis Presley.”
But for the flip of a coin, Elvis could have been entering the building at Valley Ranch

I'm with you, who knows. Nice to see how much Fisher wanted Martin, especially after everyone said how smart he was because of his team building and it turns out he wanted our guy as much as we wanted his guy...

Maybe I'm naive, but I don't think Manziel was every a serious thought for Dallas. I think it was more about trying to increase his value to get someone to Draft him early increasing the possibility one of our top defenders fall to us. Right before we picked Martin, Steven slammed the phone down indicating to me they were trying to trade back and couldn't get any takers. Cleveland probably figured that if Dallas didn't take Manziel they could wait and move up later at a cheaper cost.

Totally agree with Manster on this one. First off, I dont believe anyone thought he would be there in the war room. Im sure JJ thought about it . He would be stupid not to think about. He is not a billionaire for nothing. Hell I thought about it all afternoon before the draft and Im Romos biggest fan. When it got there though, I think it crossed his mind and they wanted to trade back a little but it didnt work.

You lost me. If they traded back for Martin, they wouldn't have Donald, no?

I agree with you both in that I do not think Manziel was a realistic option. Even if we had him rated highly, we clearly were thinking Martin or trade down.

Fisher said they would have had to pay a steep price so I was assuming they were moving up to get Martin at 17 and not trading back from 13. Maybe I read it wrong.

Exactly. If Martin went 13 to Baltimore, the Bears would have taken Donald. If the bears had taken Donald, the Steelers would have taken Fuller(both clubs are on the record as such). Then, unless the Rams took Shazier at 16, the Cowboys would have ended up with Shazier

Yeah but what if Johnny Manziel didn't fall that far if the Ravens won the toss? Can't just rewrite history without considering the other possibilities for change as well. Maybe in another universe where the Ravens won the toss, the Jacksonville Jaguars select Johnny Manziel at #3.

Why did the rams not try and trade up with the cowboys? The Rams now have a ton of talent on thei defense. On the flip side they are paying an average qb too much money

Because they know we aren't stupid enough to give up a quality pick in a deep draft just to move up a few spots to get a particular player when similarly talented players will likely be there if we just wait it out...oh wait...

I may be in the minority, but I do like Manziel. But, yes we were damn lucky we won the coin toss because Martin was in that small group of players that looked to be pro bowlers. Manziel wont be a pro bowler anytime soon.

So we did not want Manziel, and did not draft him and we found so rumor to help us blame Jerry for something he did not actually do?

If you could just be patient, Jerry will give you something legitimate to complain about.
