I don't hate the pick but how does he fit into a 3-4 defense? He is more of a 4-3 DE to me.

What he brings: He's a tough and versatile defensive end prospect with very good strength. His best attribute is as a run defender, but he's an effective power rusher, especially when moved inside to defensive tackle on passing downs.

How he fits: It will be interesting to see how new defensive coordinator Joe Barry uses the versatile Smith. He projects best a defensive end in Barry's scheme based on the tape, but he's capable of lining up at outside linebacker based on the way he tested, and he's an excellent pass-rusher when he reduces inside. New general manger Scot McCloughan gets a player who bolsters the defensive front regardless of where he plays, and McCloughan has done a good job of getting better in the trenches on both sides of the ball with his first two picks.

Not doubting the player. Kerrigan is 10 pounds lighter than Smith and has better pass rushing moves. Great run stopper but we have that in Murphy. I guess when we rush five on 3rd down its hatcher , paea, and the 3 lb's.

Our front seven could look like this:

Hatcher/Smith - Knighton - Paea
Smith/Murphy - Robinson - Riley - Kerrigan

Forgot Francois. We already had 3 De's. This draft tells me that there is no confidence in Murphy and Moses

I'm almost positive he will line up at OLB. Most sites are listing him as that for us.

Very true. He's 6'5", 260 pounds and actually ran a 4.7 40. He can rotate with Hatcher and Paea and spell Smith if need be. Kerrigan, Smith, and Murphy are actually one heck of a combo of OLBs / 5Ts we've got.

I can't believe we still have people thinking OLB IN A 3-4 need to cover.

That idiot Haslett had all of our LBs covering. He used to be Tricky Dick and have Kerrigan out covering people like Shady McCoy on obvious passing downs. And you wonder why he's no longer here.

Randy Gregory has more ability. But the most important ability is availability and SM just could not trust Gregory to stay clean. They were talking about Preston on the radio. Gotta be honest, when I saw the tape he kind of looked a bit slow, another Trent Murphy, to me.

But then I read where the defense he played made him appear that way, then as mentioned earlier his combine times were faster than Fowler, and of course the Sr Bowl and In Scott We Trust has eliminates any doubts for me. So I'm on board for sure with this pick
