Jaws has him dropping out of the first round.

Would you take him if you were the Bengals? This is purely hypothetical as I'm well aware of who owns/runs this franchise.

No.

I know I am in the minority, but I have stated my dislike for him before.

I'd rather take Mettenburger or even the kid from Georgia, and you might be able to get either of them in the 3rd round.

Apparently he had issues with gripping the ball?

Great...he's another Jon Kitna.

I think Bengal fans on this board are vastly over-hyping Zach Mettenburger. He's alright, and may be a good late round pickup, but is really a Ryan Mallett type of guy. Even if we did bring him in, he's probably not good enough to take or even challenge the starting job from Kitna_2.0, so really you're just talking about wasting a 3rd or 4th round pick.

He didn't throw in a glove during his pro-day. He always wears a glove. I'm not sure why he decided to throw without it.

No one is going to challenge Andy for the starting spot. It's not open for competition, and Marvin and the Bengals lover Dalton.

As much as everyone would love to see a QB taken to push him, chances are they'll sign a Fitz or a Campbell to be a Veteran backup or some scrub who poses no threat to Andy, and that will be the end of that.

The chances, outside of injury, of another QB starting for this team is 0%. If it could be negative, it would be negative. He's going to get extended, and be the starter here for a long time.

I'll admit that I didn't understand all the Teddy hype going into last season. But the one time I really watched him, I saw him will his team to a win. He made plays when it counted. I can't say this one sample will predict anything in the pro game, but you get a sense about certain players. I think in the right situation, he'll be pretty good.

I like Mettenburger.... But I fear that he might make Carson Palmer look mobile.

Yeah I get that, but I'm not inclined to waste a pick on a guy who I don't even know will be able to do that. I think the Bengals would be better off going out and trying to nab a reasonable backup, or a guy like Tyrod Taylor from the Ravens who at least has the potential to be a starter on 4 or 5 NFL teams. A guy like him would at least be a formidable challenge for Dandypants. I don't think we'll accomplish that even with Mettenburger.

I don't disagree with that, either, but if you're going to go that kind of route, I think a veteran guy could be used. Crocker even said as much in a recent interview, that he thought Andy lacked a true veteran mentor with some aspects to his game, and may need that. Who knows.

I really like the Mettenburger kid. He reminds me of Big Ben.

Murray was another guy a lot of people were really, really high on entering this year, but kind of fell off. I think he was injured at some point, and of course Georgia didn't live up to expectations, either...but he's got a really solid arm, and is a smart guy.

if the bengals draft a qb it will be after they address a few other needs, most noticeably depth and planning for the offensive line and secondary.

I get a weird feeling they like Josh though.

Yes. We'll draft a left tackle even though we had a perfectly good one in Anthony Collins.

There's no reason to believe the Bengals wouldn't open up the QB spot for competition if they used one of their higher round picks to select a QB.

Rumors in the past have even suggested not everyone within the organization is sold on Dalton.

To answer the question in the OP, if it's between Teddy and not drafting a QB at all in the higher rounds, I say absolutely yes to gambling on Teddy. If it's between Teddy and another QB in any particular round, then absolutely take a gamble on either one - it doesn't have to be Teddy.

A high round QB is a must in the draft this season. It's the only way Andy ever gets competition. If they don't draft one now, they'll extend Andy either this offseason or the next, and after he gets his extension, no way they open up the competition in the next 5 years. It's now or never.

I thought Teddy could play, and I'm surprised to hear he's dropping out of the first round, what with all the qb desperate teams there are at the top of the draft. The times I have seen him play his accuracy and quick decision making ability were impressive, and he looked like he could make all the throws. He would have been my first choice of a generally unimpressive group. But then again I never claimed to be a draft guru, or a quarterback analyst.

That's what I'm here for Doug -- I'm both a draft guru AND a QB analyst. Though I should mention that my real expertise is in evaluating safeties. I'm particularly fond of studying guys that play corner that might be able to transition to safety. It excites me.

With your rounded skill set, you, yourself, are like a corner that could play safety.
