Nothing will go wrong with those because you can tune them to only cover a certain range. Tesla coils create electric potential differences which cause current to travel through the air. You can dictate how far the current will travel by tuning the potential. Then stick a grounded conductor at that distance in the direction you want the "lightning" to shoot, and that's the only point to which the "lightning" will go. As long as the coils have a safety on them that doesn't allow the potential to be tuned too high, no one will get hurt.

That's why you have the engineers preset the potential when they build it and have someone regularly check it. Tesla coils don't have to be tunable. It's just usually useful to let them be.

I only know a little about him but I read a book about crazy geniuses or something like that and that first, best, and longest chapter was on Tesla. Fascinating guy.
