St. Pete Times Forum's $35 million-plus facelift is becoming reality - St. Petersburg Times

the idea is to improve the in-arena experience ... or at the very least, electrocute people

Another signature addition will be Tesla coils on either side of the scoreboard that will shoot lightning 25 feet.

"How can you be named the Lightning and not have a signature effect in the building?" Leiweke said.

Tesla coils are amazing, and Nikola Tesla may have been the smartest person ever to live.

Nothing will go wrong with those because you can tune them to only cover a certain range. Tesla coils create electric potential differences which cause current to travel through the air. You can dictate how far the current will travel by tuning the potential. Then stick a grounded conductor at that distance in the direction you want the "lightning" to shoot, and that's the only point to which the "lightning" will go. As long as the coils have a safety on them that doesn't allow the potential to be tuned too high, no one will get hurt.

I have a feeling that instead of hiring someone like you to operate this potential fry gun theyll have a 17 year old (or dare) at the trigger

That's why you have the engineers preset the potential when they build it and have someone regularly check it. :thumb: Tesla coils don't have to be tunable. It's just usually useful to let them be.

I only know a little about him but I read a book about crazy geniuses or something like that and that first, best, and longest chapter was on Tesla. Fascinating guy.

What could go wrong?

this is an organization that referred to Vinnie Lecavalier as the Michael Jordan of hockey.
they also had an Ace Frehley night, and had 15 banners put up around the building of an entirely difference KISS guitarist (Tommy Thayer)
ept_sports_nhl_experts-90668619-1299101820.jpg

so the answer is nothing. absolutely nothing can go wrong.

true but its has the potential to be akin to an amusement park ride ... engineers install and monitor (on occasion) while 17 year olds operate ... providing millions of users with fun except for the odd severed limb :thumb:

That would be good to have out front if you had a daughter and a boy was coming to pick her up for a date.

Also, notice that no electricity is going to the concrete. Concrete can't provide a ground. However, the lawn can. That's how you control those things.

But concrete IS the ground. Man, this Darkstone guy knows dick about science. ;)

You want to be safe in a thunderstorm? Stand in the middle of a parking lot. You can't get struck.

Right out in the open where it can kill me? That's crazy!

I'm going to find the tallest tree I can find, preferably one standing on it's own so others can't fall on top of me, and take shelter under that.
