Mays is buried on the depth chart. What about making him a LB in nickel packages? He's not much smaller than most LBs in the NFL.

I like to see Mays go after the QB and see if he can produce something positive for us. I am dissappointed he's not nailing down the safety role but he can be used for so much more.

And his instincts and anticipation aren't that much worse than most pop warner LB's. Bowman's still a work in process, but I trust him way more at this point to fill that role in coverage with his good speed, and I can guarantee you the pass rush is not even close between Bowman and the Scud Missile.

I tend to agree with this, but it really depends on how Fangio sets up his D (obvious statement). The only downside to this is it seems like a real "specialty" position for the team. For his draft position, I think we'd all like to see him (or any player) contribute on more downs. Even if he does this and turns into a special teams dynamo (for example), we likely lost a lot of value with the pick. My two cents.

Maybe we should play a 3-3-5????

Not a bad idea. Maybe for certain downs. But playing Mays at one of the LB spots would essentially be playing a 3-3-5.

I just want the Niners to get something out of the guy. It pisses me off that the 48th overall pick on a position of lesser value is sitting on the bench.

Never know, try it out in some fashion... Maybe Mays works better towards the LOS.... got to find something for the kid, it's football!

Mays might be able to make a switch to LB but it would be as WOLB in more of a cover two scheme, surely not a 3-4 defense. It just baffles me how much they dislike Mays. The guy has so much ability, a coach with the smallest amount of imagination should be able to figure out some way to use him. I think he can be a great special teams player right now.

I'm not sure if you missed it, but Vic Fangio made a statement that Taylor Mays is not suited to play linebacker. Going by memory here so forgive a possible misquote, but he said something about how his frame and game don't fit the linebacker position.

I agree minus the exaggeration lol. His anticipation and instincts would make him a liability at ILB, IMO.

At this point I'd like to see him as a situational pass rusher because of his speed, but beyond that he hasn't done much to give me any confidence in him.

As a tackler, Mays has a lot of talent, albiet raw. He is a physical specimen but may also be playing the wrong position/out of position. I don't really think you can teach somebody coverage skills - you can work on it, but it's not like working on free throw shots in the NBA.

It's unfortunate for the guy because he has mad athleticism, but his skillset is all over the board but not tailored towards what you would want in any one NFL position.

I kind of see Mays as a 'tweener between a safety and a linebacker.

He did make a couple of nice tackles in yesterday's game, and he will be a special teams player.

I really think the coaching staff will keep him and try to utilize him.

Also I do agree that we are not getting a 2nd round pick value out of him.

Ummm...nooooo. A LB has to wrap up, a fine point that seems to be lost on Mays. At least that can be taught, and he seems like an intelligent lad, but right now he too often seems to go for the big hit rather than the sure tackle.

mays was far better last night than spillman. witner and williams probably have the starting gig sewn up. goldson may be the backup, but i'm not big on the kid. mays needs another year or two [i was way too optimistic on him last year] but i still think he can be a solid SS. he had a decent game, took fewer chances than i expected and was solid in his tackling. he kept his hits low, instead of going for the higher, sportscenter, hit. he does, however, need to wrap up more. he did get burned in coverage once, but i hope they can a. teach him and bring him along and b. hide him and make him a run stopper/blitzer in certain situations.
