It is amazing how easy it is to get guys signed now with this slotting. I say somewhere they said nearly 137 players have signed. In 2010 (before the slotting) at this time of the year...there were 12 or something like that.

AJ Green was the first player in the entire draft last year to sign. So, Mike Brown does not seem opposed to paying rookies their slot value, it was the old out of control draft signings that made everyone anxious and hold out.

Mike Brown loves the new system. Of course he'll pay the money for the rookies - They are now great bargains. In fact, I'm guessing you'll see a lot more draft day trades in the future for the Bengals. They will continue to stock draft picks and sign more rookies. We'll likely always have one of the youngest rosters in the league.

Yeah, I remember reading an article (Grantland maybe with Bill Simmons) on how contracts should be structured in such a way that your play this year determins your pay next year...all contracts would be under the same 5 contract status colums.

(I'm going off memory so this may not be 100% correct)

tier one of a contract would be your role player reserve. League minimum with some bonuses attached. Nothing special.

Teir two would be your 6th man type deal. Role guys who start occasionally, and are actually important to your team. they would make above the league minimum, again, with bonuses.

Tier 3 would be your average starters. Pretty self explanatory.

Tier 4 would be your All-stars. These are the guys above the starters, but not quite in the next category.

Tier 5 would be your super stars.

In this scenerio, each player would be paid according to certain bench-marks predetermined. Everyone gets a 4 year contract (or whatever) and then you are paid based on your previous season's bench-marks.

Now, I know that this would NEVER happen, the players make way too much money (the lesser players that is) but the overall goal would be to pay the superstars more than they make now (I think he said NBA player that are "stars" make less than "stars" in the NFL or MLB...for whatever that's worth)..and would get rid of people paying stupid money for player who really...don't do nothing but somehow make a ridiculous amount of money in a F/A year.

This would also keep teams on a even ground as one team can't offer more "money" than another team because the player can only make what he achieved based on the prior seasons stats. Each year, the salary is fixed, so the player is getting paid for what they do each year. Also eliminating the sign for big money eat your way out of the league Baron Davis issues.

There's a lot more to it, but that's kind of the general idea. Would be great overall, but like I said...no way that would ever happen.

It also makes trading for, or out of, the #1 or #2 picks (higher picks) a lot easier. Before, no one wanted to trade for #1 unless they had a legitimate need for a QB type player...because the salary they were automatically going to get was ridiculous.

They are great bargins NOW, but still unsure what you are drafting.

Akili Smith, David Klingler, Ki-Jana Carter, Kenny Irons, David Pollack, Odell Thurman, Rey Maualuga, etc.

They all do not work out, so the bargin only applies to those that succeed, in our recent history...Green, Dalton, Atkins, Gresham, etc. Those turn out to be the bargins, at the beginning of the process, they are not bargins, but stocks. You pay so much hoping that they blossom, rather than bust.

Hard to throw guys in there that had severe injuries. Now, Irons never worked back from his injury and that was on him, but Carter tore his ACL back when that was pretty much it for RB's or skill position guys. Pollack broke his neck. I don't knock him for leaving.

I also say that had Klingler gone to a team that didn't try to change his style/ability he may have been an OK qb. Houston ran the run-and-shoot. Had he ended up there backing up Moon at that time, I think he would have had a better chance. Instead, the bengals took him and tried putting a square peg in a round hole. Run and shoot QB into a WC offense....not usually a great mix.

Yes, and if they blossom, you lowball them, let them move to Houston and simply draft a new 4 year bargain. It's Mike Brown's new system.

I disagree. He offered Joseph the same contract basically with a tad bit less guaranteed. Granted, he could have offered a bit more, but they were in teh top two in bidding, Houston and Cincinnati for Joseph.

Plus, we had Hall and Pacman, acquired Clements and thought we would be okay for the most part once he didn't resign. That obviously did not happen, but in the past several years, we offered Palmer a 9 year extension early, we offered Chad a multi-year extension before his was up. We resigned Peko at a good price tag, Geathers, spent a crap ton on Bryant and Owens for one year, etc. We have built the program right in the last 3-4 years. We will lose some guys, but we will replace them with hopeful backups ready to make the transition.

You can't keep all your superstars.

Atkins, Dalton and Green are goign to cost us a fortune when it is time to reup them. Dalton will be no where near Carsons extension, but he may get 6 years, 60 million. Then you have Green which may be the second highest paid Bengal ever behind Palmer, and Atkins is going to get around 8-10 mill a year. These are going to come up quick, and we need to keep these 3 in Cincinnati for a very long time.

Joseph's only real downfall to us resigning him to more than what Hosuton offered, was his track record with lingering injuries. He always seemed to miss several games a year due to minor injuries and nicks, and most of them dealth with his legs or feet. Not a good place to continuously get hurt for a DB who relies almost solely on his speed.

Two guys that we lost in the last decade are on the top 100 list - Smith and Joseph. Good for us for re-upping Palmer, Peko and Geathers. Mike Brown knows a bargain when he sees it.

How many players on our current roster will make the list? AJ Green and........

I just finished the book 'Swag' by Elmore Leonard. Fun read. Highly recommended...and yeah, the new CBA rocks. Those rookie contracts were outrageous. Happy weekend all.

Are you telling me at the time Smith went FA, you would have given him as much as SF did? I sure the he;ll hope not, because he wasn't more than a run stopping end on our defense. He obviously got much better.

Or maybe we didn't maximize his talents.

Regardless, I'm just saying that there are two examples of guys that we drafted being stars somewhere else. J-Joe hurts more because we knew he was good and he played at a premium position.

I think Mike Brown actually does a good job of approaching players early - Sign them up a year before FA. There is a lot of incentive to make this happen on both sides. Look at the case of Leon Hall - If he doesn't sign his big money deal, he is looking at a 'prove your healthy' deal next time around.

I don't have as much faith that we'll win contract battles once a player reaches free agency - I think the next guy we'll lose will be Andre Smith and I think he'll end up as an all-pro somewhere else.

I have already been saying we would lose Smith. Which is why OT was a 1st or 2nd round selection next year I think.

I hope they can re-sign him. Next year starts the mandate for 99% of the cap spent, so Mike has to spend the money somewhere. However, I did read that there are a ton of contracts up after this year, so it will be interesting to see who they target to re-sign.

Smith showed a lot of progress last year. He's just got to stay healthy. His weight hasn't been an issue since his rookie year, and last year I think he showed that he could be the long-term answer at RT. I guess we'll see.

As for Justin Smith...different defense surrounded by a lot of play-makers. Something he lacked when he was here in Cincinnati. I always thought he did a decent job. Was he a 10-12 sack a year guy we thought he would be? No, but he really improved in his run defense, and did a decent job of getting to the QB considering the lack of pass-rush the line presented across the board when he was here.
