I'm not going to suggest collusion (okay I might), but I'm still quite surprised not one single offer sheet was tendered for Stamkos.

Teams don't want to give up four 1st round picks. The price tag is just too much. Plus the Lightning gave every indication they would match any offersheet.

I think GM's need to stop being such vag's. I'd like to see more offer sheets. They are totally legal and the team who signs an rfa still pays for it via a multitude of draft picks.

i think it has less to do with respect and more to do with the outcome.. the only big name offer sheet was kessel, and ask leaf fans how many of them are thrilled with that move

and ask bruins fans if they liked picking in the top 10 twice for a streaky 30 goal scorer..

offer sheets are far too expensive and far too risky for teams to chance it, even the most established players can watch their careers take a dive when they change cities and linemates

I think GM's just have to be smart. Both parties can win if they are careful. Stamkos is a star caliber player that would have been worth any draft picks. Doughty is in the same boat. These are guys teams will never have a better shot at getting then now.

Teams will be able to get Stamkos for nothing, but $$ in 5 years. It's a much better scenario than 4 1st round picks & the money as well.

kessel was thought to be well worth 2 1sts and a 2nd when he left, just look at how that turned out.. that move probably set toronto at least 2 years back in their rebuilding, maybe more considering that it would've been 2 high profile draft picks that were potential NHL-ready players, and seguin already proved he was.. we'll see how long it takes hamilton to develop.. and jared knight is a quality prospect as well

and toronto only gave up 2 first round picks, can you imagine if a team did that for stamkos and it resulted in 4 lottery picks going to an already competitive team, instead of a team that was rebuilding?

granted, it would be a different situation if a contender signed stamkos and gave up 4 picks.. but it still could've collapsed when teams had to fit stammer under the cap (aka blowing it up for a big contract player)

Great deal. Yzerman did a terrific job locking up his franchise guy long term, but not TOO long term. Nice cap hit, it gives them flexibility, and it gives Stamkos a chance for more money in five years if he keeps producing. This is the kind of deals players signed before the lockout.

this surprised me very much. I thought for sure someone would offer up about 8 or 9 per to bury the Bolts on the cap.

The Sabres are still paying for Thomas Vanek's offer sheet. Thank you very much Kevin Lowe.

Has Brian Burke given his press conference yet to say how the Leafs were very close to signing Stamkos but walked away because the price was too high?

this deal has bad numerology/karma/fengshui all rolled up in one

Stamkos' cap hit next season will be tied for the seventh highest with Heatley and Gaborik.
