And we have money: $7.5 million.

It took you THAT long for a 5 year $7.5 million deal?

Great deal for Tampa. I'm just happy that they made a normal deal. Especially with Crosby and Staal up for FA next summer. That's both a good number (underpaid when you look at comparable numbers around the league *coughGomezcough*) and a very good term.

thats really the one that sticks out.. kind of odd to see a high profile player to sign for less than 872 years

Exactly...especially since we're going to start seeing the negatives to those deals in the next few years (in fact we already have), with so few players hitting the market. Anymore it seems like every team has one of these guys, as Pens fan I'm thrilled we don't. Nothing beyond 5 years.

This reflects very well on Yzerman and what he is building there in Tampa. Congrats to him and the Bolts fan(s). :rapture:

It really works for everyone. It's a manageable number for Tampa and gives Stamkos a chance at an even bigger payday while still in his early-prime.

i'm jealous.. the caps are the same way pretty much.. OV and backstrom have long contracts but aside from that they have less than 5 guys signed past the 2012-2013 season

although they flyers moved their 2 longest contracts this season.. the pronger contract is just murder.. timonen and hartnell are overpaid now, but they only have 2 more seasons

This contract has nothing to do with Yzerman doing a good job, in fact I'd say it's quite the opposite. 5 years puts Stamkos at UFA status, which is probably the only reason he agreed to take this deal. There had been talk of Tampa wanting to sign him to a 12 year + contract, but then there would be no way he could get out of Tampa. Which means that in order to secure his freedom he had to take a deal below fair market value. I'm not saying Tampa has a bad team or is a bad city, but it's not a real hockey market and to some players it's important to have some input on where they play(unless your name is Heatley in which case stop crying ).

IF anything I think this shows a few problems with the how RFA's work. If an 18 year old comes into the league on a team he's basically stuck there or 8 years. That seems to be entirely too long considering that is just about half of a professional athletes career. Not to mention that they need to be in the league 4 years to qualify for arbitration and entry level contracts expire at year 3. This whole system protects the owners and teams that are constantly losing money in bad hockey markets and not the players.

I think it would make more sense if arbitration eligibility was set after 3 years in the league and RFA status was only guaranteed for 5 years. Teams would be given time to put a quality roster together and sell players on their philosophy and long term plans.

I'm not going to suggest collusion (okay I might), but I'm still quite surprised not one single offer sheet was tendered for Stamkos.

it's the wrong year for it.
Every team with an interesting RFA had cap room to match a maximum offer.
the only reason to do it was to fuck with TB by making them overpay.

If I'm an Oilers fan, I'm way past losing patience for the Lowebellini tag team.

I think GM's need to stop being such vag's. I'd like to see more offer sheets. They are totally legal and the team who signs an rfa still pays for it via a multitude of draft picks.
