When do you see us running straight up the gut and gaining yards though?

Our rushing attack is successful due to misdirection and multiplicity.......and speed. We're doing it all with skill, and it aint good enough. If we could line up and just run the ball straight down a team's throat, well then we could start controlling games again.....and that is a key ingredient to being a Championship team.

But if we have to keep relying on fooling Defenses with a zone-read or by running out of a bunch of different formations, we are always going to have to deal with penalties and turnovers and all that shit that comes with it.

Disagree. We were very effective running the ball out of the I this season. Should have done more if you ask me.

I'd attribute most of our offensive problems this season to being too predictable and undisapline. But we avg 461 yds and 35 pts per game so I'm not half as concerned with the O as I am with the D.

So with a bad offensive line those RBs and QBs are doing what they have been doing? Then we should have some All American RBs and QBs!!!!!

Listen, I am not saying that there aren't issues there. Like our sacks allowed numbers are not good. The best ranking we have had in that over the last 5 years has been 31st. But also remember that from 08-10 Cotton was working under an OC that changed what he wanted his offense to do constantly. That is hard to teach continuity. Being ranked in the top 15 for 3 straight years in rushing is no slouch and it isn't all because of the RBs. Our RBs have been pretty good but considering the number of different RBs we have used due to injuries over the last few years and they all still have success has to say something as well.

I am not looking for coach of the year awards for Cotton but the venom towards him is too much in my opinion.

No sir pass blocking is pass blocking and run blocking is run blocking.

I respectfully disagree Jed when Roy broke off 300 plus yard game against rado. he wasnt doing it at 3 or 4 yards a pop. I mean I get what you are saying about having a top 15 rushing team over the past three years is something to hang your hat on. But to say that Nebraska has a Top 15 o-line far from it. Take for instance when we played minnasota and we had or big set in on the one yard line and we couldnt punch it in with cross Honestly we should be able to get that one yard every fucking time EVERYTIME I dont care who the fuck we are playing we should be able to get one fucking yard

We ran like 4 dives this season.....

:bump:

This thread died too soon.

If he's not going to make any personnel changes in the off-season then Bo needs to send Dobson and Papuchis off to learn what other teams are doing to have success up front and defensively. Osborne had to do it in the late 80's early 90's and the dividends payed off well.

Just a few examples would be Alabama, Stanford, Notre Dame, or even BYU.

Strength and Conditioning is player and position specific. Dobson seems to be doing ok w/ skill players, but whatever his specific program is for the big uglies doesn't appear to be working on gameday.

Send Barney along too. He can ask around about pass pro and see if anyone knows what that is.

It's hard to point the finger at Cotton and Kaz when they are potentialky being limited to what they get from the weight room and training table.

How does one properly evaluate how good your lines are in practice when they are both under the same strength and conditioning program. It's gameday that they are being exposed.

Remember Dobson had never led a S&C program prior to arrival at NU in 2008. It's extremely hard for me to fathom that fixtures like Steinkuhler and Meredith didn't develop in the 4 years they played.

A program like NU should have a finalist at least every other year for the Outland.

Look at the NFL scout for any o lineman coming out of Nebraska.

What do they all seem to have in common?

I'm not dismissing S&C either. There's not one coach on staff that should miss that trip to Bama, Stanford, etc.

I agree pass pro is a weakness, but the Huskers aren't a predominantly passing offense much more than they were in the glory days. Believe it or not you recruit different style players for run and pass blocking. Your better pass blockers have big wing-spans, your better run blockers have shorter.

That's why an offense needs an identity.

Sure a big part of pass blocking is technique, but you still need strength as a foundation. The NU O-line was getting shoved around in pass pro.

I don't think it's such a stretch for linemen to be able to both pass pro and run block.

True.

You're asking for a special player to excel at both. There's no way to get more than one or two of those types on one line in the same year.

Out of some 130 FBS teams with 5 starting lineman each, how many of those are 1st and 2nd round draft picks?

Why don't they just run the fuck upstairs and ask T.O. before he leaves, T.O. could also arrange conf. call with McBride at the same time. Talk about a waste of resource.

I don't think they have to excel. Just do their jobs with good technique.

So send ol' Barney off to a predominately passing team to learn pass pro technique. Where would that be?

Well then we need to game plan to get the ball out to TM hands quicker when he passes. If our online can't pass block for more then Three seconds. Make quicker plays

I'd rather NU fix the problem than compensate for it.

Or Turner at qb, with some sort of package that has ameer, bell, heard, TM, Enenwa, allen.all on the field at the same time. My point is try and confuse the hell out of the defense. Put all of our top play makers and speed on the field At the same time. and run reverse passes or shovel passes. Or even a conventional play I don't care. I just want our top play makers on the field at the same time.

Besides, I'm fairly happy with the offense outside of turnovers.

I agree they can improve in pass pro, but I'd rather they run well. Which they are doing.

I'll take 24-17 wins all day long over 62-55 WAC shootouts.

Getting the ball out of Taylor's hands faster = turning the ball over faster....

I'm with RA here. The problem isn't even something that should be difficult to figure out. These guys who are coming up on the Defensive Line need to be kicking it in the ass right now.........right this instant to prepare for next season. And they need the right strength and conditioning plan to do it.

The only guy on our Defensive Line this year who had any sort of burst, quickness or ability to adjust and make plays was Eric Martin. Every one else looked slow and disinterested in even playing.
