This year reminds me of the 1974-1976 seasons. We were getting kind of long in the tooth and Zelmo Beatty was the center with a roster that included Pat Riley and Happy Hairston under head coach Bill Sharman. We had a losing season in the 1974-1975 season at 30-52 and we just looked disjointed and out of sorts with poor offense and worse defense.

At the end of the season we made a major trade with Milwaukee to pick-up one Lewis Alcindor who would become Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The next year under Sharman we improved. Then the following season Jerry West became the coach and we were building a team that would eventually include one Earvin Magic Johnson and Pat Riley as head coach. And the rest they say is history.

Dr. Buss had an acute business and basketball acumen that few rivaled and he was building a powerhouse that went on to win five championships. I see parallels of that stretch to what we now have but I see one major difference. Jim Buss has nothing of the level of either business or basketball acumen of his father. He needs to be replaced by his sister Jeannie who has the same precision in both areas that her father possessed.

Whether that change includes Phil as GM or GM/coach is only left to speculation but I think we would be on a better track for rebuilding if Jeannine was running the show. I hope it works out that way. Otherwise, it could be awhile to we see another good season. We are going to see changes in this off-season. We simply can not continue with the mix of players and coaching we now have and I know Jeannie knows this. I doubt if Jim does.

I foresee us building around Howard and keeping people like Goudelock and Kobe and maybe even Pau, but I am quite certain the majority of this roster should change and a definite change at head coach would facilitate the rebuilding process. If nothing happens as possibly may occur with Jim Buss because he is a complete dunderhead, then next year may be very difficult indeed.

Anybody that picks the Spurs in the Lakers last game of the season should be ashamed. Probably the right call but to win or not finish with the diaper (Really). Anyone can pick the Spurs, real Lakers fans don't.

This is it. Fuck.

Lakers 93

Spurs 110

The Spurs will almost certainly put us out of our misery tonight and usher in the official beginning of a long period of darkness in Laker history.

Well said retro, if I may add one thing here. Another big difference between the son and the father is that Jerry Buss knew how to surround himself with smart savvy people, when to step in and when to acquiesce. He had a burning desire to win at all costs and new that he should rely on the talents of guys like Jerry West and others. I think Jim's ego is such it prevents these aspects to flourish and would rather be a guy like Mitch then have Mitch make the final calls on the direction of the Lakers organization. Only time will tell how this will all shake down.

And by the way blue, I'm not ashamed to pick against the Lakers. I can separate rooting for the Lakers from predicting the score in this contest. Trying to call out other Laker fans for their realistic view is weak.

:agree: And if I should take the Season Crown I will do it without ever taking that shame.

Still not convinced it can happen, but if I lose to sman, it will be with picking with my team 100%!

 Don't feel bad DownSetHutch, he's only giving you traders some grief.

But you know, this is a contest, not a point of view. If you didn't notice, he stated his view and it was the same as yours. He just separated his view from his play...

Maybe I read too much contempt into that response. :gaah: Oops.

But when it comes to the contest, I'm in it to win it, not to prove my Laker fandom (which is supreme to all anyhow.) As soon as I make my pick, I put my purple-tinted lenses back on and try to figure out how our team is going to pull out the victory. This one is tough to figure out. The only way I see us winning is by jacking up shots without feeling any pressure, and maybe the majority will fall. :hope: It's definitely not going to be because we have more talent on the court or better coaching though.

Would love nothing more than to see the Lakers win. We are certainly a spoiled lot having been blessed with so many Championships and great players. It's hard to see the sparkle on the diamond dim, but we've been through this before and the Lakers will be back.

Regardless of what happens tonight I'm sure no one is jumping ship. :2cents:

No you are weak Hutch, I know the Lakers are not going to win, if I was putting money on the game, that would be a different story. The fact we are all (I think)Lakers fans on this board you hoping on a loss for a contest is not only weak but to defend it and call someone else about about being a fan to the end is something the Heat board is looking for. Why not join them there. Your prediction is probably close, I know the end is coming also.

I know you are a fan Hutch, we all are, but Vita can separate the difference between love and fame.

To finish the point Hutch then I will lay off you because really you are just calling the game, maybe you didn't notice who leads this contest anyway. It can be easy or hard to play.

Never will I jump ship on this team. My prediction of the Laker's losing was hoping to reverse our luck. Like I said, I will be proud as all hell to wear the poopy diaper tomorrow as if I do it will mean the Lakers won..............

On the pre-game on TNT, Shaq stated that the end result of this game is a Laker loss because the players will play hard for 3 quarters then play o-lay defense and it'll be over especially if SA gets a really big lead. I have a tendency to agree because this is what the Lakers have done all season. Charles stated this will occur because outside of Kobe, the Lakers in their present roster state are not mentally tough due in part because Don'tknowi gets frustrated, whines, and then pouts at the slighest sense that the players are not following his obviously out-of-touch coaching. Everyone knows changes will have to be made. What they are nobody seems to know. Perhaps that is a reflection of clueless Jim Buss. That aside, I have been following the Lakers for 50+ years and I am not going anywhere. I'll be right here next year like have for the last 50+ years.
