RED SOX AGREE TO 4-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH RICK PORCELLO

Rick Porcello

PHILADELPHIA — Rick Porcello is going to be with the Red Sox for a while.

The Red Sox announced on Monday night that they’ve agreed to a four-year extension that will keep the right-hander in Boston through the 2019 season. Porcello’s deal is worth $82.5 million, and includes a $500,000 signing bonus, salaries of $20 million in 2016 and 2017, and salaries of $21 million in 2018 and 2019.

Porcello announced the deal in a post for The Player’s Tribune, the web site operated by former Yankees great Derek Jeter. On a conference call with reporters on Monday night, Porcello and general manager Ben Cherington explained their reasoning.

“Obviously I knew the opportunity in entering free agency, but when I had first got to camp and saw the way, from ownership to Ben to the coaching staff and the players that were there, how everything was run from top to bottom, and the devotion to win a World Series here, I knew that as something I wanted particularly to be a part of it,” Porcello said. “It wasn’t a very difficult decision for me at that point to stay here.”

The 26-year-old Porcello went 15-13 with a 3.43 with the Tigers last year. The six-year vet has won 76 games in his career, and the Red Sox believe he can be a front-of-the-rotation starter, as evidenced by his $20 million-plus salary.

At the same time, the deal is a win for the team, presuming Porcello stays healthy, because had he hit the market at age 27, he probably would have commanded six years and $120 million.

“We think Rick’s a really good pitcher, and a really talented pitcher, and driven to succeed,” Cherington said. “In any negotiation, there’s all sorts of variables. Performance is one of them, talent is one of them, age is one of them, and team need. There’s all sorts of variables to consider. It was no different in this case. As we talked through all of those variables, myself and (Porcello’s agent) Jim (Murray) we were trying to work towards something that worked for everyone. We’re all happy we did that, and extremely happy he’ll be a Red Sox for a long time.”

Should be a good signing for the Red Sox but did they really need to sign him for that much and that long right now before he truly proved himself in Boston?

Price is high but the Sox know they have to give more $$$$$ on the short term contracts. I believe as a free agent Porcello would of got $15 mill+ over 5/6 years. He is earning $12.5 mill this year. I do believe the Red Sox should have waited to offer that at the seasons end though and seen how he done in Boston first.

Who needs pitching when you're on pace to hit 810 home runs?

They have 5 aces, haven't you been paying attention?

Hahaha. Do you remember that goober from FN who claimed that the Red Sox didn't have an ace but between the majors and minors had about a dozen MLB-ready 2-4 pitchers? Watching Atro bat that guy around provided some good laughs.

I do remember that guy. He was really into it.

I couldn't name but one or two guys on The Pawtucket Red Sox and I doubt I ever could.

It's a bit of an overpay, but the years are fine. Porcello is only 26 and while his career ERA+ is far from impressive, he had some of the worst defenses in the league behind him in Detroit. His FIP and xFIP were considerably lower than his actual ERA for several years (especially 2013). I would like to see him get some more strikeouts though.

They overpaid .... a lot, imo. But it's not my money. He's solid but I think at think at this point in his career he is what he is... a decent #3... maybe #2 on a weak staff. Good for Ricky. The Tigers are going to miss him I'm afraid.
