The question is: Parity or mediocrity?
Interesting point. I think the difference now is, there is much quicker movement up and down. It used to take teams a lot longer to rebuild, and it took contending teams a lot longer to fall off the top of the standings.
Now you have teams competing for the Cup for a few years, then having to strip down and sell off vets. Other teams are building towards a Cup, preparing for a maybe three or four year window in which they can really compete.
It used to be if you had a team at the bottom of the standings, it was probably going to be there next year and the year after. If your team was on the bubble, it probably wasn't going to get a lot better or a lot worse any time soon.
Now you have teams like Dallas, Carolina, Chicago, etc. that are going up and down the standings almost year by year.
It's not really fair that a team can work it's ass off to get stacked and then have to let guys go to stay under the cap, but I think it beats the alternative.
