Just got an expansion hockey team approved by the NHL on promises of a renovated Key Arena. If the arena is going to be good enough for hockey to compete in the modern era it should be adequate for an NBA franchise as well. How long until hoops are back in The Emerald City?

It would be pretty difficult it would have to be an expansion franchise not many people know this but not to long ago the Kings were sold to chris Hansen with the intent to move the team to Seattle years back.

now the kicker is that any team that relocates has to go through a relocation committee that votes on it and you know who is the president of the relocation committee? The Owner of the Oklahoma City Thunder the guy that took the sonics in the first place and he sure as hell does not want his team going to seattle to play and having seattle fans and their team come to Oklahoma. So he was able to nix that relocation to Seattle and the Kings stayed in Sacramento and Hansen had to sell back the team

I think with the NHL going to 32 teams now, the NBA will follow suit soon. Seattle would have to be one of the NBA expansion teams 1 would think.

As soon as the NBA makes Oklahoma City give back the team they stole. :dhd:
If the Browns can be replaced with a new version then the Sonics should be able to. Oh, wait, how's that working in Cleveland?

How many dual sport (NHL and NBA) arenas exist these days? Scheduling would be a nightmare, and having ice under the floor is always problematic.

Many. MSG, Detroit's new arena, hell, doesn't LA have the Clips, Lakers and Kings all at Staples. Scheduling is only a minor issue.

Just looked it up, there are currently 11. And I haven't heard of ice problems since the old Garden was closed.

Not exactly the wave of the future though...or the way to entice a new franchise.

But not exactly a dying thing either. Both the Nets/Islanders and Pistons/Red Wings went from stand alone arenas to shared spaces. And 10 of the 11 have opened since '94, which is fairly young in arena years.

Didn't the Sonics leave largely because of their arena situation? Not sure re-heating the old arena will get it done in the eyes of potential new ownership.

As in the original post, if the redo is good enough for a hockey franchise to expand there it will be good enough for the NBA. It's not like the NHL still plays on ponds with BYOB.

I think it depends on the re-heating. If there are major upgrades to the old arena that bring it in line to match what newer arenas offer, then it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
