Now that CFB is all done with I'm thinking about getting into watching NHL for really the first time, in serious mode. Not really sure who to follow. Maybe someone can help pick a team for me. Don't really care if the team is world beater or not, however pretty fucking sure it won't be a Canadian team. I will consider all input. :suds:

I think the best way is to watch a bunch of teams and then find one that has a player that you have a mancrush on or a style of play you like.

I chose the Buffalo Sabres as my team because when I started to watch hockey it just made sense to like the team that favorite football team was from.

That isn't always the best way to do it.

Set some criteria for yourself. What teams do you get on tv where you live? It is possible to follow a team that you don't get to see on tv all the time but you will lose interest if you can't watch them whenever you want.

Good points ^

I can watch just about any game I want here, thanks to the EU servers, teams on the East coast would be easier because of the time difference. I have considered the RW's with my connection to Detroit, but I don't want to be a band wagoner either.

The availability of the streams helps.

You could always like the Maple Leafs. Great city, nice tradition, and no way anyone would ever call you a bandwagon fan if you like them.

You could always follow the Sabres. We have a tremendous new owner who wants to win more than the players seem to want to but I think we are on the verge of some nice things.

When I first started watching the NHL seriously, I set myself the task of selecting a team to follow that wasn't a currently established powerhouse team, but seemed to show some potential for being an up & commer (yeah; like I could even tell what that would look like!:laugh3:). That way, I reasoned, I wouldn't feel like a 'band wagon' fan who only followed a sqaud because it was already perennially playing for championships.

My 1st choice? - Atlanta: That one didn't work out so well. :laugh3:

My current choice? - Minnesota: The jury is still out on that one, but I'm content with it so far.

Well Parise and Suter signings certainly can't hurt a prospective new fan.

Well....

He purchased the Rochester Americans to keep as the Sabres AHL team, He was the man that helped Penn State get a DIV 1 hockey team and paid for the arena, he is really changing the area around the arena by adding an Alumni Plaza for starters.

He was a Sabres season ticket holder in the 70's and said one day when he had the means he was going to buy the team and he did.

Ive been paying mind to the standings to go for a mid range team with some potential, hard to tell though so early, and coming off the strike shit. Ive narrowed it down to Eastern teams, but thats as far as it's gone

Certianly sounds like you've got a plan: I'm sure that you'll do okay with your eventual pick. ;)

A good owner makes a huge difference, like the opposite of the Lions owners

You should pick the Coyotes!!!!

You used to live in the area, and hell, we could sure use more fans....

Although I do have to admit Clarkson has a point about that big red N......never looked at it like that before......

I did this last year, I picked Phoenix Coyotes, my first season of following them? They go to the WCF. Genius pick, but the main reason I picked them was the hopes of them relocating to Portland.
