It seems the holdup is the current health of Gilbert Brule - Sounds like the Oil also offered up Sheldon Souray, but the Kings rejected that offer.

The rumor is that Burle can't be bought out because he is injured (concussion). Kings didn't want him to begin with. They were willing to make take a fifth round pick. Oilers wanted to unload Burle and the deal was upped to a fourth round. Kings found out that they couldn't dump Burle and couldn't use his cap space because if he comes back after the buyout window they lose the added cap space. So the Kings would lose Smyth, not gain (enough) cap space and pay someone on LTIR.
If the Oilers pulled Burle from the deal this would be over.

i regret posting anything on this stupid Smyth trade/non-trade. But, seriously, if Gilbert Brule is injured, then why doesn't Tambellini just put him on LTIR (thus getting the cap relief) and then, if/when he's healthy, send him to Oklahoma City (thus preserving the cap relief)? What's the big deal?

However, the Kings contend the Oilers didn't file the paperwork required to certify Brule's ability to play. Without that the Kings would be unable to shed his contract.

reminds me of the Blackhawks a few years ago, who forgot to fax some documents and almost lost the rights to all of their RFAs
they had to scramble around to sign everyone within a few days (ie. overpay), which put an extra squeeze on their cap problem.
