...by sporting news. good to see a hockey man get it. when you think about the differences in the sports, hockey stands alone. in what other sport can a 22 year old be going into his 5th season (god that went fast), have a scoring title, an MVP, a goal leading title, a stanley cup, etc.? most kids his age are moving back in with their parents because they just graduated with a bazillion dollars in student loans. and in other sports, kids that age are just starting to crack into lineups or struggling in the minors. one of the reasons i love hockey is the youth movement...they bring passion into it.

agree with the youth movement.. the younger the players are the more passion it seems they have.. 1 of the reasons the WJC is (especially this year) so awesome.. and part of the reason why, from a hockey fan's perspective, i dont want the NHL to play in the olympics

from an NHL fan perspective though they should keep playing cause just look at how much it helped the game this year

yeah, it's a thin line. obviously the players want the olympics because who doesn't want the chance to play for country. however, the teams, notttt so much. i think there's going to be a change in that regard...if not an all out ban, at least a forfeit of salary (especially in the case of injury).

Better question is, how many kids have the luxury of having parents with enough money to send their kids to hockey camps all their lives? Not taking anything away from Sid, but a lot of kids that are great like him have been catered to their whole lives. Doesn't make him a bad person it's just the truth.. Still a remarkable player.

well i would say in basketball on average younger players have more of an impact. same with football. in some drafts, only the first or second pick make it to their teams. baseball is a sport where barely any kids make it to the team.

"At the risk of sounding blasphemous, God has had very little to do with Crosby the hockey player. Sidney Crosby is not blessed with an overabundance of natural gifts. He is not a Wayne Gretzky, he is not a Mario Lemieux. He wasn't born into a rich family that could find him the best competition and coaching money could buy.

Crosby is what writer Malcolm Gladwell refers to as an Outlier. In his book of the same name, Gladwell talks about The 10,000 Hour Rule, claiming the key to success in any field of endeavor is a matter of practicing a specific task for 10,000 hours."

That's an excerpt from a Ken Campbell article that appeared in an issue of THN earlier this year and I think it is fitting here. Crosby doesn't come from a rich family -- his mom worked at a grocery store. He didn't have world class athletes as parents -- his dad played a couple years of Junior hockey.

He is successful because, as Campbell later wrote in the article, "he is one of the hardest-working superstars in NHL history."

Normally I would say you need a ridiculous amount of work ethic to even make it as a scrub in the NHL but then there are players like Yashin...

Sidney Crosby was born on August 7, 1987, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He grew up in Cole Harbour, where his mom Trina worked in a grocery store. His dad Troy had been a goalie in junior hockey with a reputation for throwing down the gloves. When a pro career didn’t pan out, he becamea facilities manager at a Halifax law firm.

Sidney’s interest in hockey began when he was two. He played floor hockey with a sawed-off stick in his basement and showed enough proficiency against the family dryer to graduate to the ice at the tender age of three. Two years later, Sidney was competing in leagues at the local arena, Cole Harbor Palace. To raise cash for hockey equipment, Trina took odd jobs, including handing out flyers.

Looks like his parents had some serious work ethic as well just to get him into the game.

ya know...it's reading things like this that really show the reason behind the emotions these players have when they win. hockey is tough to play not just because of the skill, etc. but because it's tough to stick with. parents have to sacrifice a ridiculous amount to get their kid to that elite level. ice times are ALWAYS ridiculous, tourneys are brutal, the equipment expensive, etc.

Shattuck st mary's....they don't fuck around.

Honest to god I'd put Sid and Parise at #s 1 and 2 in the entire league in terms of work ethic. Those two leave their hearts on the ice each and every game. Never take a shift off.

You also hear the stories about all the things they do in the offseason to improve. Parise goes back to Minnesota to work out all offseason with guys like Stafford and Ballard. I recently heard Crosby was working on his jumping. Yes, jumping, this offseason. Wants to be quicker. Last offseason I know he spent a lot of time improving his shot. I'd say that worked out pretty well for him. haha

hahahah, this reminds me of a tweet one of the pensblog guys had after the hawks won the cup. it was something along the lines of "Well, one good thing that we pens fans can take from this: right now sid is sitting in a darkened basement somewhere in nova scotia with a crazed look in his eye perfecting his shot or something like that." and it's true. the man is crazy competitive.
