For some reason my local sports radio show in the afternoons always seems to talk about the courruption of the NCAA and how they make billions off of amateurism sports and use amateurism athletes to hide their corruption so they don't have to pay players or anything and yet make millions off of them.

I agree that the NCAA is corrupt in some way, but I am tired of claiming these student athletes as "Amateurs"

They are not. They get a free education, and in many of these D1 schools that is anywhere from 15k-30k at least a year. They also get hooked up with 1 on 1 tutors who help them in school in and out of the classroom.

Also, what most of these athletes do, is they get grants on top of their free ride. I know many who apply for FAFSA and get money from FAFSA. Instead of using the FAFSA money for school, they use it for recreational needs. So that is money right there. Along with getting a free education and other benefits while at school, they get grant money to use.

So the NCAA might be corrupt, but these are not amateur athletes in anyway, they too find a loop hole in the system and they get a free 30,000 a year education.

The NCAA commercials during the tourney make me sick. "Where a spirit team" blah, blah, blah. What they should say is "we can do what ever we want to try and fuck your school"

You're probably referring to 1080TheFan. I've tried to listen to it too when I'm in Portland and it's usually a constant rant from a bunch of socialists who see everyone as downtrodden and abused. I saw one of their on-air personalities (Big Suke) one time at a Buffalo Wild Wings and told him he sounds like a commie always complaining how athletes are exploited. Yea, he is as stupid in person as he sounds on the radio.

Can't agree with any of this.

Take Kevin Ware for example. They are now selling Tshirts with his number on them and making a mint off his INJURY.

Sorry, but a free ride is peanuts, it's nothing. You have overseers who make BILLIONS, not millions, directly off the kids. Look at NCAA 13, a game that will sell millions of copies......with these kids likeness, image, stats, everything. I'm sorry, but NONE of you would allow someone else to profit at that level of pay using YOUR face to sell a game and you don't get squat.

That argument won't fly, and the NCAA has a good chance of losing this court case.......and deservedly so.

Star, you know these kids get treated like royalty. Plus they get a free education, a head start on the better jobs from grateful alumni, etc. I've been guilty of it too; I have hired kids just because they were OU players instead of someone else who would have done just as well at what they were hired to do. I just can't shake the feeling that somewhere along the line these kids need to have some respect and be grateful for the chances they are being given. Perhaps you have a point but I will guarantee you that I (and a lot of people who agree with me) will walk away from my favorite college team if they start getting paid like pros. I won't tolerate somebody playing college sports demanding more money, etc. to score a touchdown or sack someone. It would be the death of the sport for the average fan.

I agree it probably won't be good for the sport overall because I have no idea how they would pay students.

The problem really isn't what the NCAA makes.....it's what they LICENSE. Louisville is going to get paid off of Kevin Ware's injury, he doesn't get a dime, that's just wrong.

EA Sports is going to make a MINT off of NCAA 13 with Denard Robinson on the cover, he doesn't see a dime, that's just wrong.

It's one thing to make money off of team sports by universities.....it's quite another to tell a kid "YOU can't profit off your own face/likeness/image/name, but WE can"

That's where they lose this case.

Don't play sports and take out student loans so you are no longer victimized. Problem solved.

Too bad it doesn't work that way. I can't see how the NCAA wins in court profiting off kids images and likenesses, while banning them from so much as getting a part time job.

Ok so if the NCAA should pay the players then I want athletic scholarships removed. The players can pay their own way through school. If its such peanuts, as you say, then pay up.

Average tuition for Texas, resident, is 5k per semester. Non resident is 16k per semester. Tuition Costs : Tuition Dollars & Sense

That's 40k for residents and 128k for non resident for 4 years.

Sounds fair. I'm on board.

You're missing my point entirely.

It's one thing for a university to sell apparel.....they own the name, logo, etc.

It's quite another when the NCAA uses a kids face, image, or stats to sell a product and not compensate them.

That's direct exploitation, regardless of any scholarships or anything else they receive.

If a company you worked for sold a 9 billion dollar product with your face on it, you'd sue for compensation as well, let's not be hypocrites here.

I'm for paying the athletes a reasonable sum over and above scholarship benefits. Many of these guys will have severe, life-long medical issues from playing 4 years in the college ranks.

I don't see any resemblance on a video game to the actual person other than color of their skin.

I really have no response to the 'stats' comment. You can't be serious.

I'm completely serious. When I pick up NCAA football or basketball, they have the player's uniform number, stats, and image already loaded.

Footlocker, Champs, etc sell Texas #10 jerseys, and we ALL know who that is.

Once again - its one thing to profit off the team, the logo, the image......it's quite another to profit DIRECTLY off the specific athlete.

Louisville is doing that right now. They are selling Final Four shirts at 25 bucks with Kevin Ware's number on them.

If you can't grasp this, then I have nothing else to tell you. You simply don't want to see it for your own reasons - your bias won't let you see the exploitation.

We're not even talking that much money, and we're not talking EVERY athlete either. Only a handful are going to ever generate money, and it's probably in the 2 - 5 thousand dollar range.

I'm willing to bet the house that if Kevin Ware decided to sell Louisville red t shirts with just his name and number on the back, with no logos, the NCAA would sue and sanction him.

If a university sold jerseys with just the number 0 or 1 or something, they'd only sell a select few. But if they sell the jersey of the star player, they're flying off the shelves.

That can't be allowed to continue unchecked. How much money do you think Florida made selling Tebow jerseys?

And Florida is probably the best at this sort of thing......before Tebow, you could only buy a #1 jersey, or a 96, when they won the title.

Well like you said the school owns the logo so they can sell it all they like. The players don't own a copyright to their number. I've already said if you want to pay players, fine, I want scholarships removed and they can fork over the $40k-$128k to attend. However why stop there? What about the travel costs, hotels, ect. Lets go ahead and make them pay their share of that.
