It's been around for a long time is probably the worst reason to not change something. I believe that we should poll every Native American available to be polled and and see if they feel the name should be changed and if they do, the Skins should have to change it but if they don't, the rest of us can shut the fuck up about it!!! As 1/8th Potawatomi not only does it not offend me, it is the main reason why I followed the Redskins as a kid. I've never personally heard anyone with Native blood complain about this name which tells me that it is more about PC white people being offended than Native Americans. I could be way off base but that is my opinion on it.
You said Indian four times. Native Americans are not Indians (thank you Columbus...Let the Indian Nation determine if it offensive. Now what we need to figure out is what determines the Indian Nation. According I have a little bit a Blackfoot blood running through my veins. The Blackfoot blood count is so low that she said my little toe is Indian. The way I see it with such a small amount of Indian blood I shouldn't be allowed a vote of if the name is offensive or not. For what it's worth I don't see the Redskins as an offensive team name, now for the Cleveland Indians mascot, that needs much more attention on what may be offensive.
I don't thing the Redskins should have to change their name, but as a Cowboy fan I'd love it if the did have to. The whining and bitching coming from that fan base would be priceless.
I've never seen a Native American complain about it.
You said Indian four times. Native Americans are not Indians (thank you Columbus...) As a Cherokee (1/4) I never cared much about the 'redskin' wording more than I cared about being called an Indian. It's not just a PC thing...is it the correct thing....Americans. As for the the Skins , mark me down as for the Skins keeping that name or my brother (a Skins fan ) will not be happy. It's a pride thing for him and their fans. Colors....go figure....are white people really white? Black people really black?
Indians are from India..the country Columbus thought he landed at and mistakingly named the indigenous people he encountered. It is not really a derogatory name...just the wrong one. What do you call people from India? You mean to tell me Native American Indians are NOT Indians? So why has there been a scholarship set up for American "Indians"?
I can understand if you don't like the word "Indian" but it is a word to describe a race, and I have never heard it to be determined derogatory. If it is derogatory to a large percent of Native Americans, I apologize for using it, but it is impossible to eliminate all words to describe races because we'd all end up being called people. Hell I bet that would offend someone.
Good for them. I was only speaking about my own personal attitude toward it....not for a race of people. You didn't give a response about what the OP asked. The Native Americans around here call themselves Indians.
