San Jose re-upped on Big Joe today. Three years at $21 mil. Little surprised that it's so short-term with all the gazillion year contracts going around these days.

Interesting note: in 2014 the Sharks will have the following players turn UFA...

Joe Thornton
Dany Fucking Heatley
Patrick Marleau
Dan Boyle

Of course, I'm assuming the Mayans are wrong, here.

It's too bad for Doug Wilson - he could have gotten essentially the same player in Jim Thornton, and because he doesn't have the name recogniton of say a Jumbo Joe Thornton, gotten him at a fraction of the price to boot...

don't forget that most players now will not get contracts past 5 years in length because of the new rules

I dunno. Zdeno Chara just got a retirement deal with the Bruins.

Interesting thing I found out recently: the reason teams love those cap-circumvention contracts isn't because they expect a player to retire at 40. It's because they become easily tradeable to a team that can't spend to the cap. If a 40 year old former star has a $7 mil cap hit but only makes $700,000, a team like the Islanders or the Thrashers will gladly take that contract. The big cap hit doesn't mean anything to them.

SJ felt they had no other options other than to resign Joe ? I think they could have made offers to RFAs and UFAs in the coming years and went in a direction other than choking every single year. There comes a time to try something new and I thought SJ might be up for this but then again look at NJ and their inability to come to grips with the fact that they have been done for years now.

I thought Jumbo Jim was one of the Sharks best playoff performers last year...Maybe he's finally discovered that extra drive to take the Sharks to the promised land.

As for the deal itself, I think Joe left some money on the table (actually took a small paycut from his previous contract).

Joe Thornton has stated (more than once) that the longest contracts he'll sign are for 3 years. He signed a 3 year deal with Boston before being traded and has since signed two 3 year deals with San Jose. Both times he's left money on the table, I'd guess in the $1.5million range.

With this extension and Marleau's contract, it looks like the Sharks have 4 year window to win a cup.....I won't hold my breath ;)

I honestly thought the Sharks would go in a new direction at some point. I guess they prefer to lose in the playoffs.

Well, they decided to get rid of Nabokov, who quite frankly wilted in the playoffs for the Sharks. That's one way of going in a different direction.
