Well, I think it would be a good idea for him to just shut it down for the year because it's pretty clear he's been dealing with some kind of injury all season long. He should just rest up and be healthy heading into next season.

He's not exactly a young guy anymore either. Back injuries are usually chronic as well, I'd hate to see Alfie be forced to retire.

Yeah and I think he's been dealing with back problems all year. Last year he played through a sports hernia and wasn't as slow of a skater as he has been this year.

You're right though. Hopefully it's not chronic or his career might be winding down sooner then expected.

I'm seeing a very disturbing trend...

I've had this hunch that this year was going to be it for him anyway. Physically, he clearly is in a decline, and you kind of had to suspect it's injury related. Had a rough patch last year. But you never really quite knew, because he never says anything.

With the struggles, I kind of expected him to go somewhere like DC or Detroit as a rental and take a shot at a cup, and then call it.

I would hate to see it end this way. My thoughts about him as a captain aside, the guy is supremely talented and gave everything to this team, even when he shouldn't have.

Get well, meatball.

he has been one of my favourite meatballs in the league.
probably for his sense of humour as much as his playing.
that thing when he pretended to throw a stick in the stands (after Sundin did) was hilarous.

also, he will forever be on the 'buy that guy a beer' list for this

I have to agree with you forty. It would suck to see his career end like this. Lets just hope he can come back from it and he can play another season. If not then it will be a sad day for the franchise.

The only thing semi positive is that fact that it would force management to look at seriously rebuilding for the long term. Without Alfie, there is no way they could even compete for a playoff spot I don't think.

Yeah that was awesome!! I can't even begin to describe how angry that made Leafs fans though. That combined with the Sundin mocking cemented his villian status in Toronto. What's funny is that Mats even said he thought it was pretty damn funny later on.

This won't be the end for Alfie.

We all knew he was playing with an injury. He should just shut it down in a lost year; honestly he should have done that 20 games ago.

If he shuts it down now I guarantee he is a 60 + player next year. After that I see (if he chooses to continue) a Recchi type of play afterwords.

Right now I think the Sens should shut him down for the year and let him show the young team of 11/12 how to work next year.
