This town loves it's soccer team. No doubt about that.
Name me any other city in the US that could pack 64K into a stadium for a soccer game.
Then consider the Mariners were playing the same day against a division rival and only managed 40k. So the soccer team has more support right now than the baseball team that is still very much at least in the hunt for a wild card.
Here are some cool stats about our attendance
- Sounders avg attendance is 44,038
- MLS league avg is 18,608 (No other team has ever averaged more than 29 k in MLS history)
- Englsh Premier League's avg attendance is 36,631
- Sounders have the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 10th highest single game attendance in MLS history.
- Since 2008 the entire top 10 in single game attendance is owned by the Sounders
I bet if our stadium's capacity was 75 k or 80 k, if it was the right game we'd fill that up too. Also if we opened up our stadium's capacity more regularly our avg attendance would at least be 50 k
