The staff at the UW's Burke Museum figured out that the Seahawks logo was inspired by an illustration of a Native American "Kwakwaka’wakw transformation mask depicting an eagle (in its closed form) with a human face inside (revealed when the mask opens when danced)."
Image.
It is a bird head mask that opens up to reveal a human face when it transforms during the storytelling associated with the mask. They then figured out where the mask was located, in a museum in Maine.
This is pretty cool, and a very respectful way to actually honor native culture.
